Syracuse coach on hot seat

If there's a coach in America under more duress this week than Syracuse's Greg Robinson, it is difficult to imagine. In his fourth season as head coach of the Orange, Robinson's record fell to 7-30 on Saturday after a 42-28 loss at home to Akron, a team that was picked to finish last in its division of the Mid-American Conference. It marked just the second time the Zips had beaten a BCS team.

I'm glad that T&R has still not waivered in their policy to only display college basketball coaches when they are in the midst of LOSING IT on someone.

What a SAD SAD SAD (in the words of the Stones) state of affairs. The AD should be looked at as well. This program used to be a powerhouse but now cant even recruit in its backyard. The Dome aint rocken no mo.

September 9, 2008  07:43 AM ET

Does Syracuse have a football team? Thought they only played basketball there.

September 9, 2008  07:53 AM ET

Elite BB team damn it! Anyone notice Boeheim was an assistant coach for the Olympic team? He got no credit from the coverage....Duke coach blahblahblah

September 9, 2008  07:57 AM ET

Dead Man Walking.

Whatever happened to Syracuse? They can't even beat the worst team in the MAC? AT HOME????

September 9, 2008  08:20 AM ET

"What happened to Syracuse?" The new athletic cordinator fired Coach P because he had a couple of bad years. But he had also created great players like Donavon McNabb and Marvin Harison. He didn't deserve to be fired. Now nobody wants to go there as if 140inches of snow a year wasn't enough reason all ready.

Its a great college town if you can put a decent product out there to watch. The hoops team set attendance records..and so will the FB team....if you count the mascot as 1 of the 100.

September 9, 2008  08:27 AM ET

Being from a suburb of Syracuse I can tell you this.....I think there are only 3 peope in Syracuse that don't want to run this joker out of town.....The Dean, the AD, and his wife who is enjoying his $1.1 million per year salary. Teh AD is a joke too, but he is pretty safe...he is a minority pick by the dean, so every sports program at SU will have to fold for him to be gone. As for Robinson.....he must have direct deposit on his paycheck....otherwise he'd have to go out of town to cash it.....I'm not sure how he cashes it AND sleeps at night.

September 9, 2008  08:28 AM ET

Akron didn't beat a BCS team Saturday, because SU is not a BCS team.

I grew up in Syracuse during the John Mackey, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, Billy Hunter, Wally Mahle, Larry Csonka years. It's sad to see this once solid program sink to the depths it's currently at.

September 9, 2008  08:40 AM ET

I was there for the undefeated season and the Pat Tie Auburn bowl game. This really makes me sick......perhaps they should join the ACC so they can play Duke. I know everybody I use to get tickets from gave up their season ticks JJRaider...there has to be an echo in the dome.

September 9, 2008  08:50 AM ET

Daryl Gross,, the Athletic Director should be taking the heat as well. He hired this stiff and is sticking by him, so his butt should be canned when Robinson takes the fall!

September 9, 2008  08:51 AM ET

Syracuse made a mistake going away from an option-run offense. High school football in New York is traditionally run option offenses and it was that talent that Pasqualoni tapped in to.

September 9, 2008  08:52 AM ET

They have to can Robinson and go back to that old style football at Syracuse. It could take awhile but they need to bring back the option.

September 9, 2008  08:53 AM ET

The only and I mean ONLY way Syracuse is going to return to its glory days is by immediately hiring a high-profile coach to boost recruitment. They have the attraction of the networks to be televised again once they are competitive, especially with a tv-friendly schedule year after year. Problem is, who's available? Ty Willingham after Washington axes him? No thanks. Norm Chow? He'll never leave Cali. So who's available?

September 9, 2008  08:53 AM ET

It's hard to do that when the same guy produced a National Championship Basketball Team. Not tha I care about the guy, because I agree that he should be fired. I just think they need to do something about the Football coach. They need a recruiter. There is some really good talent coming out of New York high schools.

September 9, 2008  08:59 AM ET

Daryl Gross was not the AD when Cuse won the national championship in basketball dude, he was hired in 2004.

September 9, 2008  09:05 AM ET

Let's get one thing very straight here. Daryl Gross, our incompetent AD, DID NOT create a championship basketball team at Syracuse - JIM BOEHEIM DID. I'm sorry but that comment almost made me sick. Daryl Gross is an idiot, starting with the fact that he changed our team name from Orangemen (which we've carried with pride since the turn of the century) to Orange (who wants to be called a fruit?). He should have been fired years ago. Considering how greedy and money grubbing Syracuse University is, I can't believe Gross and Robinson are still around as the football program loses millions a year for us. It should be the biggest money maker on campus, but because Greg Robinson and his staff can't recruit, we're quite possibly in store for a winless season. It's a real shame. The people of Syracuse and the students there deserve better.

September 9, 2008  09:06 AM ET

Daryl Gross wasnt around when the won the national title in basketball he was hired 4 years ago. Their was rumors of hiring Norm Chow 4 years ago when they fired coach P because Daryl Gross was the assistant to the AD at USC. Him leaving UCLA now with the recruiting capabilities they have their to come to Syracuse would be commiting career suicide

September 9, 2008  09:07 AM ET

Love this quote from Peter King column:

"Akron by two touchdowns AT Syracuse? Akron. Wow. Talk about a new low for the Orange"

How the might have fallen. CUSE is a JOKE!

September 9, 2008  09:07 AM ET

I have to agree with you Hova, Cuse has to go back to the option, there offense sucks right now and they cant recruit. There is talent in upstate NY but they are not going to the Cuse.
