Petty taking shots at big owners

Kyle Petty is taking some hard shots at NASCAR's inability to hold Cup team owners in check and to keep the sport's biggest owners from getting even bigger. On his weekly TV show Petty pointed to the close ties between four-team owner Rick Hendrick and Tony Stewart's new two-car team, terming that essentially a six-car operation. Petty drew praise from fellow small-team owners for his blunt assessment about NASCAR's failure to keep the playing ground level. Petty termed the new Stewart team as "Hendrick South." "And I said that's no different than Jack Roush and Doug Yates," Petty said, referring to those Ford team owners who have partnered in what clearly looks like a six-car operation. Petty also pointed to the new closer business ties between Chevy owners Richard Childress and Teresa Earnhardt's DEI as another example. Petty -- with a two-team operation -- said: "They just went from super-teams to mega-teams."

Petty should just do the same thing with GEM or Penske and create a "dodge mega team"
Stay the hell away from Ganassi though.

September 9, 2008  07:25 AM ET

There may not be a Dodge Mega Team if any for long!

September 9, 2008  07:32 AM ET

He needs to get over it. The smaller teams like Yates and Haas partner with the larger teams so they're not relegated to the back of the pack with Kyle Petty and his principles.

Kyle is old school.....and for those comments he summarized the dismal future of Nascar.....one big team with the same format as the WWE.

I'm going to have to agree with nin here. This isn't old school NASCAR, and while I respect Kyle Petty for trying to keep it that way, one person can't stop a runaway train.

The only way to stop a run away train is to derail it.
NASCAR needs one major shake up before it kills itself.

September 9, 2008  08:40 AM ET

He is just angry over his poor performance. If I am not mistaken Petty enterprises was one of the first multi car "Big Owner" teams.

September 9, 2008  08:55 AM ET

Time for Franchises and Spending caps???
Increase field size to 44 and have 11 eleven four-car teams. All cars guaranteed to make every race, makes it easier to find sponsors.

September 9, 2008  09:13 AM ET

that would shut out independent and owner/drivers which this sport was built on. I think thet should limit team size to 2 cars with no " close ties" so you don't see the Jugernauts running over the small guys. They are circumventing the system providing parts and such to other teams.

September 9, 2008  09:14 AM ET

Kyle is right, but the times change and this is what NASCAR has become. The days of one or two car teams driving actual stock cars (anybody remember them) are gone. I seriously doubt if they are coming back. We need guys like Kyle to speak frankly but it won't change anything.

If Dodge doesn't get a grip on their financial stuff, they may stop backing Dodges in the Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series just as they are in the Truck Series next year.

that would be death to me...........Obama has promised to help the American manufacturers, (lol).

September 9, 2008  09:41 AM ET

NASCAR is so concerned about keeping everything as even as possible on the track...why not do the same thing with the way teams are run, compete for sponsor $$, etc...only makes sense to me

September 9, 2008  09:45 AM ET

I guess Petty forgot to mention they have a deal with GEM and they get engines and technical support from them its the pot calling the kettle black

September 9, 2008  09:55 AM ET

Well Dodge isnt lacking in HP, they are runner up to Toyotas. I think they lack in engineers, and quality CC and maybe drivers. There is really only 1 Dodge driver that is decent, Kasey Khane. Don't get me wrg I like Kurt but he hasn't done much since the switch.
Petty needs some support. I like teams helping other teams. He needs someone he can team with, and as previously stated stay away from Ganassi. I am curious about GEM I don't know what isn't clicking there, they should be better than they are.

I'd rather see the money go to the big three than IRAQ Jackman

Shut up and drive Kyle. If you were any good you wouldn't be saying ****

September 9, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Boston Ventures is partnered with Petty, they invested big money earlier this year. The statements from Petty are coming out of a corporate boardroom.
Say Good Bye to Nascar as you know it.

Mr. Joe; I have been reading your posts for a while and it is clear that you are confused between American brand and American made.Years ago the Big Three started closing plants in the U.S., laying off American workers and outsourcing their jobs. we now have many "foreign" cars made here in the U.S. and many American "brand" cars made outside the U.S.If you really want to help the Americxan worker, buy American-made, not just American-brand.I want my money to go to an American worker rather than be put into an American corporations pocket, with only pennies given to it'e foreign workers.
The Big Three cannot expect these same Americans who had their jobs outsourced to feel sorry for the companies dilemna and buy the American "brand" but foreign- made cars. Before you buy a car or any product, find out how much of it is made by American workers, and support the ones that are, regardless of the brand.
Sorry, Mr. joefordandproud, but you cry a little too much. My father was a union steelworker who lost his job when the mill closed and he just moved on to get another job. I was a union worker for over 35 years, so this is not union bashing. look at what the companies are doing.
