10:14 AM ET 09.10 | Remember this summer when USA/Galaxy forward Landon Donovan talked about giving Europe another try? England was the most discussed possible destination, but two sources told the Insider this week that German club Bayern Munich was also interested and that early-stage discussions did take place. There were several obstacles, though, including MLS's reluctance to relinquish its best American player and the league's concern about weakening the marquee Galaxy.

My biggest question would be why. Donovan would have a hell of a time competing for a spot in the Bayern midfield. Unless we were purely looking for some back up cover; never in a million years would Donovan become a Bayern starter.
The only way this is true might be because of a New Age Klinsmann, along with his "California" philosophy, would be trying to bring in an LA based American. Either way the concept is absurd.

unlikely he'll ever see the field if not a super sub....
i dont doubt LD's ability, but Bayern would be tough to crack... perhaps if LD (and US fans) would look at this as a long term investment rather then an instant gratification then perhaps in a year or two... but any attempts at starting this season or even the next would be tough ...

Both posts are dead on. I like Landon, but he's a pretty one dimensional player. He's all pace. Bayern is a team with great balance in the midfield, really Ribery is about the only M who doesn't contribute on the defensive side, but that can be forgiven for the way he orchestrates the offense. There's NO WAY he could compete at F where he's been played stateside. I mean, if Poldi is finding it difficult to crack the starting lineup, where is Landon going to fit in? He's definitely talented, but unfortunately limited. For all he truly has done for MLS and US Soccer, I'd hate to see him take another hit to his rep as a player by trying be the "square peg in a round hole" overseas.

I would see if there was any interest in Spain or Portugal. Even France might be a nice fit.

Who cares? Donovan stinks, and the only tournament he's ever showed up in was the WC in 2002. He's not the man to lead the USA into the future of world football. We should look forward to Bradley, Adu, Onyewu, and Altidore... they're already rockin Euro leagues anyway.

jessumm, this story has nothing to do with the national team, nor leading usa in world football, it does not have geopolitical implications, easy there
as for bayern, i assume they'd play him in an attacking mf/distributing role behind toni, could paly well with ribery and lahm, but yea, la galaxy to bayern is a bit of leap, i'm not sure he'd even crack the reserves, plus won't he be a bit of a laughingstock with the rest of the players in the league
as for the MLS, they need to drop this crap where the league owns all the players and their contracts, its counterproductive to both the growth of the league and the growth of US players

eh, the league didnt want to drop LD from LA b/c of two reasons:
1) LD has a no trade clause in his contract
2) Loosing LD for the rest of the season would d*mn near kill LA's chance at a playoff run... and since Beckham is the "face" of LA and the MLS for that matter, seeing their team not make the playoffs for a 2nd consecutive year would be too funny....

keeper- i agree with you on this.... PT is too valueable for LD .... not only his ability to grow but also his self-esteem

Apparently, some folks haven't been watching Donovan this year if they think all he has is "pace" and that he "stinks." LD has improved over the last two years, even at his age, at taking one-time balls, his first touch is better than ever, and his long-distance shooting from outside the box has been much more impressive. And without him, the USMNT is a step down in class, and much less dangerous. I am guessing BM are seeing the same thing I am. But, like many of you I ask, why go to a team where you're going to have to battle for time and find a spot where you fit in when there are plenty of teams in Europe that aren't in the elite that could use him right away? Many of the teams just under elite status in Holland, England, Germany, and France could probably use a player like LD right now. So why Bayern? Doesn't make sense to me either. Try Ajax, or PSV, or Everton, or Aston Villa, Dortmund or HSV, or maybe even PSG, or Monaco....

I think he could make the subs bench.
The best role he can have is being a second striker off the bench if podolski leaves
I just hope MLS doesn't shatter another dream, like they did with Clint Mathis

I just don't see why anyone would want this player. He's good, but his time for Europe was years ago when he decided to come home. MLS should not sell one of their best American stars.

Yes indeed.

there's no room at Bayern for LD. he does need to go to europe at some point though. france or spain would not be bad, it would definitely help his creativity. but ain't no way he's going to Bayern, even if he was good enough to start instantly, there is no room

LD just forget playing in the Bundesliga league b/c u fail badly the first time. Oh and u better ask Beckham what it feels like playing in europe and the pressure is 100 times bigger over there. He'll probably get loan to a 2 division team after his 4 weeks with the club. He too small n does have enough talent to play for Bayern Munich. We remember how he got push around during the 06 world cup.

First, how can i get to the next rumor without going to the previous page?
I think Donovan should go back to Europe. Bayern Munich is a big stretch. Especially with Sosa and Kroos. He should go to a mid-level team in a major league. Go to Deportivo, that team needs more offense. Or Everton, or Aston Villa, or Sampdoria. A competitive mid-level team

Maybe a midlevel team in Germany. He'd come off the bench for Werder and Schalke not to mention Bayern.

Hova,
I agree with you. Donovan just ain't cut out for the Bundesliga. Spain would be a better option, but I don't know that there'd be any takers.
Good luck--just not too much--with you and your Socas tonight.
