Kobe Bryant will forgo surgery on his right pinkie finger and report to training camp as scheduled when it begins later this month, the Lakers' guard and reigning NBA most valuable player announced Tuesday on his website. Bryant said on that he consulted with "numerous hand specialists" before making his decision, and opted not to endure a post-operative recovery period that would cause him to miss the start of camp on Sept. 27. Initially, reports put the recovery period at six weeks, but Bryant said he was told he could've been sidelined as long as three months.

Interesting decision. Let's just hope it doesn't bite him and the Lakers down the road this season. If it becomes inflamed or injured futher, he will be required to have surgery, which would cause him to miss 6-12 weeks DURING the season.

Kobe knows more than anyone the extent of pain of it. Given he's 'suffered' thru it since February, it seems that it'll be okay with just more 'rest'

Kobe, whether you like him or not, he is a warrior...He wants to be on the court for the whole season...We'll see if this decision comes evident in January or February of next year.

He was probaby afraid that his johnson would reject it

It's true what a Lakers official stated. The fact that he won the MVP, led his team to the Finals, and won Olympic gold, proves he's still able to perform at a high level with the banged up finger.

Once again he is driven to win which is fine. However his ambition is limited by his ability. The best player is in Boston; The best team is in Boston;... Phil, Scottie and Mike..Phil, Shaq and Kobe... Notice what's missing in LA?

Lostwill :get Lost with that celtic talk, Kobe will get his ring this up coming season.

If you have an actual pinky injury or any finger, when it's really injured then it should be dealt with right away. This proves that the pinky wasn't a serious injury. It's just a sprain that anybody could go play with it. I had so many finger sprains and dislocations that all you do is pull it back and let it heal. It will be painful the first 2-3 days and also swollen but you can still play through it. Just wrap it up and it's ready to go. If the finger is really broken then a surgery is a must. There should be no ifs and thens.

I'm Rick James ****

If things line up for the Lakers, like Bynum being 100% and they figure out what to do with Lamar Odom, then they have a good shot to get Kobe his ring... The only area that the Lakers have that is a glaring weakness is their interior toughness...They really need to get a banger that will make people think twice about skipping through the lane...Bynum just doesn't have that mindset yet...

Well he went to the finals, olympics, and all star game with the busted finger, i think he will be fine, i think he is used to it by now.

September 10, 2008  03:52 PM ET

I have no problem with Kobe wanting to hold off on this. He knows he has a shot once again at a title and now he has BYNUM back. You always take a chance of getting injured in sports. He could twist his ankle at anytime too.Kobe knows what suits him the best!!

KOBE BOOMBYAE!

September 10, 2008  04:14 PM ET

You guys are naive. Kobe definitely considered his own well-being first. The doctors probably told him that after all these months, the finger has almost healed, and that surgery won't help much.
The fact that surgery requires a long recovery time is just something that lets Kobe spin the situation to look as if he's helping the team.
It was simply a calculated decision that he took for _himself_, with the result that he doesn't miss training camp simply being the icing on the cake.

First: this new format is kinda cool but its not easy to navigate.
Second: Kobe is a dbag.
Third: I'm just kidding but if I were a Laker fan I would hope he would just get the surgery over with he would feel much better and probably play better.

ITS ALL GOOD THE REIGNING MVP WILL STILL DO HIS DAMN THING

September 10, 2008  04:27 PM ET

the Lakers' guard and reigning NBA most valuable player ---- wasn't that Paul Pierce? Oh wait he was the finals MVP which goes to the best player on the team that wins the title -- more significant than the regular season MVP award I think

September 10, 2008  04:29 PM ET

TEEDUB -- you're right -- he could always injure himself tripping over a chair in a Colorado hotel room or something

September 10, 2008  04:53 PM ET

Puh-LEEZE!! Super Kobe do something that might keep him from getting his (in his mind) well-deserved ESPN highlights?? God Forbid!!! He's never shown me anything but an ego bigger than all outdoors.

"The doctors probably told him that after all these months, the finger has almost healed, and that surgery won't help much. "

JL: Here's the problem with that: it's a torn ligament. Those don't heal right unless they're surgically repaired. Unless Bryant does the smart thing and gets it fixed, he's risking permanent, unrepairable damage to his finger in the future. Take it from someone who knows better. I have damaged ligaments in my foot due to not having insurance to get them repaired and now I'm hosed.
