Look for three-time Pro Bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney to become the highest-paid defensive player in league history. Preliminary talks have begun between the Colts and Gary Wichard, Freeney's agent. The key date is July 15, the deadline for a long-term contract to be reached.

Freeney is probably one of the top 2 or 3 DE's in the game right now. But I can't stand that every one of these guys have to "be the richest defensive player" in history when they go negotiating contracts. I don't even know that he will get it.

As a diehard Houston fan, I hope Freeny gets hit by a truck. That being said, he prolly deserves to be the highest paid DE.

damn rights chaz!!!! he may not have had the season he did 2 yrs ago, but thats becuase he was double teamed EVERY GAME!!! no other de gets that treatment! he is the best pass rusher in the game!
and moonriver, we need to solidify a star D man, to show the rest of the D that they matter to the team! i hear what your saying , but sometimes you have to do what you have to do......you dont want freeny disgruntled like lance briggs!

ferrell....that may be the only punch mayweather landed cleanly! good shot!

June 15, 2007  09:14 AM ET

Freeney's awesome, but I'm sorry, no DE deserves that much money. A truly fantastic MLB or safety, like Ray Lewis or Rod Woodson in their primes maybe, but not a DE. Especially one that can't defend the run. He's a one-dimensional player.

Bad choice by Colts.

June 15, 2007  09:15 AM ET

There is no doubt that Freeney is a premier pass rusher, but that seems to be his only game. From what I have seen he is absolutely worthless in the running because he always plays pass and overshoots. The main reason why he may be more valuable to the Colts than any other team is because opposing teams always seem to be behind while playing the Colts and therefore have to pass. He's good but I don't know about top dollar good, but then again the market for all positions seems to be inflating (dangerously).

June 15, 2007  09:16 AM ET

I want him to be disgruntled. i think he should get mad and demand a trade to the Vikes.

June 15, 2007  09:16 AM ET

Damn fungus. You beat me to the one dimensional comment.

June 15, 2007  09:18 AM ET

Woohoo! Up next, funkier hair-do. I'm the champ baby!

June 15, 2007  09:20 AM ET

big mistake.... don't do it Colts...

June 15, 2007  09:24 AM ET

I think it's a good deal, good way to reward a bog part of the championship last year.

June 15, 2007  09:30 AM ET

We all know that the Colts won't be a dynasty team, they pay all there players too much money. Manning, Harrison, Wayne, Freeny, & Bob Sanders is about to get paid, & lets not talk about Joseph Addi when his rookie contract is up. Somebody is going to have to take a pay cut in a few years, & it won't be Manning

June 15, 2007  09:39 AM ET

He should be one of the highest players on the D. But at the same time this will push out of the colts team within two years, because they will not be able to afford him, or he will have to rework his contract like Manning did....

June 15, 2007  09:46 AM ET

Freeney deserves every penny he's gonna get. He's just that good.

"Diplomatic Immunity"- You don't know what you're talking about, or haven't watched much Colts football lately.

Ps- it's spelled "their", not "there".

June 15, 2007  09:56 AM ET

Oooh, another talented tackle is gonna be available soon? Cool, the niners still need to fill that spot.

June 15, 2007  09:57 AM ET

Pretty stupid move by the Colts.. just means they won't be able to affor some other contributer down the road. Freeney is awful vs. the run, and teams are starting to figure him out. But I'm all for it, I don't know who runs the finances for this team, but whoever it is, is a major 'tard.

June 15, 2007  10:06 AM ET

I guess you have to pay to keep a guy with this much talent, even though it wreaks havoc on the cap. The Colts are in a no-win situation. What do they do? If they play hardball, that sends a bad message to other Colts players and could prevent any shot of repeating as champs. And if Freeney hit the market, he would get swallowed up quick by a rival of Indy. So, the Colts have to take the hit. As important as Manning, Harrison and Wayne are to the offense, Freeney is the man on D.

June 15, 2007  10:08 AM ET

WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL ??!?! DID ANYONE NOTICE THAT ALL HE DOES IS SPIN ????

June 15, 2007  10:11 AM ET

The Colts won't keep Clark. Utecht is just as good or better. I doubt they will pay Brackett that much. Anyways this happens every year and it doesn't hurt the Colts.

June 15, 2007  10:18 AM ET

So they're gonna pay him a boatload of money to spin, get blocked out of the tv picture and knocked on his **** for a few more years? I'm a Colts fan but I don't like this contract. Freeney is one dimensional and defenses already know how to stop him.
