Will Mets keep Manuel in '09?

The Mets' bullpen is a smoke-and-mirrors operation, and everyone knows it. Jerry Manuel has single-handedly turned the traditional concept of the major league bullpen on its head. Under Manuel's system, there is no longer a single high-priced star who runs out of the bullpen to save the day. Still, the question is: when will the Mets drop the interim from Manuel's title? Since replacing Randolph in June, Manuel has maneuvered the Mets to within three weeks of the postseason. What's the threshold? A division title? A wild-card berth? A World Series championship?

Come on fannation, stop with the misleading headlines on your T&Rs. This NY Times columnm by the great William C. Rhoden promotes Manuel staying with the Mets - it doesn't question if it will happen. Maybe I'm being petty, but plenty of ADD-afflicted people here don't read the whole story and post comments on the fannation headline. By the way, this column was in yesterday's Times (9/10).

Jerry is not the long term answer.

September 11, 2008  07:31 AM ET

Get rid of Manuel and bring in Emanuel. Lewis that is. Then came you!

September 11, 2008  07:40 AM ET

If the Mets make the playoffs, you pretty much have to bring him back, don't you?

At least he's smiling. That is...when he's not stuttering without his teleprompter. Interviewers should wear windshield wipers when he ad-libs.

I don't think Willie really needed help with that.

Of course the Mets are gonna keep Jerry Manuel for '09. He's a gangsta. He'll stab Omar Minaya if they don't.

September 11, 2008  12:07 PM ET

Jerry is a keeper - period. He has advanced this team much farther than WillieR did -rest in peace. If the plan is to make JerryM someone esle's 2nd-in-command, then he should leave. This would be an insult! He's done an excellent job and therefore deserves the title of Mets Manager.

Keep Him !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

September 11, 2008  04:46 PM ET

The Mets will wait too long. Jerry will become a "free agent" and the price will go waaay up, THEN they will sign him!

September 11, 2008  06:08 PM ET

I think he has earned the job. He has done better than you could have hoped for.
The whole team looks happier and more relaxed under him.

September 11, 2008  08:32 PM ET

He is the most creative, intelligent Met manager in recent history. He has mad a few bad mistakes (staying with Heilman too long and now staying with A. Reyes as a pinch hitter) but fir the most part he has gotten the best out of players - what more could you want? Getting rid of him, even if the team tanks from here on would hurt the franchise.

September 11, 2008  09:30 PM ET

If the Mets win the divison or the wild-card he will the manager, if not then bring back bobby v!

September 11, 2008  11:36 PM ET

Keep Manuel and fire that bum Minaya !!
