Allen's first Vikings game a bust

Jared Allen led the NFL in sacks last season with 15 1/2, playing for the Kansas City Chiefs. The heralded pass rusher, now with the Vikings, did not have a sack or a tackle Monday night in Minnesota's season opener against the Green Bay Packers. Vikings rooters were salivating for a sack feast by Allen, waiting for a sack show. Maybe five sacks, maybe three. But Allen was shut out. The show bombed. "It's unrealistic to get five sacks a game, it's unrealistic to get three sacks a game," Allen said Wednesday. Fans, though, were expecting a lot. "They were expecting a lot; I expect a lot of myself," Allen said. He offered some advice: "People, relax," he said. "Everything's going to be OK."

Allen's first Vikings game a bust

And .... there's plenty more where that came from! Get used to it, Vikes fans!

Nice pic, after the game do you have a gig with your Loverboy cover band?

everything is not going to be ok. Everything is going to be ok for him cuz you gave him a bunch of money and will get nothing in return. Never pay big money for a guy at his position if you ask me. Last year was just a fluke. Jarred Allen is not good and Minn. will learn the hard long painful way.

I'll give Allen a pass on week 1, but with Indy coming to town and their patched up O-line, Allen has to get at least one sack, or watch out! This is what happens when you are one of the, if the highest paid at your position, and you get a big egg in you sack production. But even if Allen get 20 sacks by seasons end, that aint gonna help out with the inferior play their gonna get out of TJackson....so it's really a mute point....BoBo the clown will now go back to juggling....

Hee hee!! Good one.

nice headband, is it 1984 again?

I find it laughable that a proven player is judged on ONE game. What if Tom Brady (before injure) got traded to another team and had a bad first game? Would people be talking about it as if he wasn't any good? I highly doubt it.

September 11, 2008  09:15 AM ET

The Dude, he didn't even register a tackle. When he was heavily hyped in the preseason and you can't even find him on the box score that is worth discussing.

September 11, 2008  09:30 AM ET

Give the guy a break. The Packer O-line was just too good that night. He might do better against the Colts or some other so-so team.

September 11, 2008  09:52 AM ET

DeNamur is right. Chad Clifton played a great game and that is a big reason that Allen didn't register. Allen may have under performed as well, but don't discount the efforts of the GB O-line.

"Vikings rooters were salivating for a sack feast by Allen, waiting for a sack show."

That is one of the worst sentences I've ever read--both by composition and content standards.

He will get his numbers against the have nots...Aaron Rodgers played great and moved around..If Favre was still there he would have had one or two...

lol...you're prolly right but the Pack O-line blocked extremely well...

trebortsew.. yes they did. very well...great game to watch..had to root for Rodgers...just had to..no matter what happens to the packers this year, moving on with Rodgers was the right thing to do..

The headline SHOULD be Vikings a BUST for week 1. The whole team other than AP had a bad game. i really hope they put this one in their past quickly and rebound. Indy is a hard game to have after this, but they will hopefully find a way to play better than they did this week. That is if TJack can find a way to be a #1 QB and Childress gets a clue. It will be an interesting year, but don't count on the team as a whole to go far without a proven QB and with a clueless coach.

No one plays well in purple. Time for everyone to jump off the Vikings bandwagon.

September 11, 2008  01:51 PM ET

That Monday night game was hyped for the last 3 months up here. All of this national attention on us having AD and picking up Allen made me eerily uncomfortable. This season was jinxed from the start. Besides, T Joke isn't even a top 50 QB in the league... and I didn't need his Monday night flop to know that... the guy has always been a stiff.

If we don't make the playoffs this year - bye bye Childress & T Joke.

ALL THAT OFFSEASON MONEY SPENT , BERRIAN-BUST , ALLEN-BUST . I LOVE IT GO BEARZZZZZ

September 11, 2008  03:17 PM ET

It's funny the article doesn't once mention Chad Cliifton. Only a few wanna recognize the strength of the Pack - O line. But not Allen, nor the article's author. That's OK though, under-recognition is always a good thing for your team. It's just too bad they took that tack, because they only hurt their player's confidence and mojo, and not help him shake it off. PACK ATTACK!!! Up next, Lions.....

September 11, 2008  03:20 PM ET

Hey 'smasher, I wouldn't put too much into it that those guys are busts. Not only should you be worrying about their new players, you should also be worried about the Pack.

Nice all-caps. You sound drunk.

Clifton > Allen. He already proved it last year when Allen was playing for KC, which is why I loved how much they gave up for him.
