Well I think I know why but I'm not really going to say because I'm not sure about it. He had a great career and is very entertaining. Good luck Blanco.

it was only a matter of time before he simply was getting left off the roster.... at least with him doing it now, it seems like it was him choice and timing... he retired, rather then being left off... not to mention he's getting old and frail...

anyhow, this means more time with the fire and less mexican national team :D

He got the call-up for the Canada game, right?

Though I can't understand why. He's wily and got a wealth of experience, but surplus to Sven's needs.

Mexico is living large now that they can call and count on Guardado, Castillo, and Dos Santos. They've still got vets like Sanchez and Marquez to school the youngsters, so not only are they hungry in attack, they're comfortable in defense.

I've hated them with an unequal passion (Easy--the TEAM, not the people, not the country!) for the last 10 years, but the truth is they're the most electrifying squad in CONCACAF right now.

Not sure what keeper is referring to, but if there is some other reason that 'Temoc is retiring, we will find out about it, anyone who knows Blanco knows he's not one to stay quiet about things.
That said, even though he is an ex-americanista, he has provided some exciting highlights and plays and people just love him. So thanks for all the memories 'Temoc. I do agree it's time for him to retire from international play, he fell on his own last night (funny and sad) but I think he also knows he will get little to no PT in the near future. He will officially retire from the Azteca very soon. He still has some left in the tank so he will still be great for the Fire and MLS.

BGB - i hear what you are saying, the US vs Mexico games have been and are always some fun, exciting and upsetting games. Though i do agree that Mexico is a bit more exciting at the moment, the US is not far behind, what does concern me is the future of their offense in particular their future forward positions. Mexico has some very good prospects in that respect but that goes back to the lack of youth development programs and scouts/coaches in the US. If you don't invest in those you will badly hurt yourself in the future.

I think he's the reason USA fans have become engulfed in the USA-Mexico rivalry. My lasting memory of Blanco will be the WC 2002 game where he was taunting Mastroeni.

Blanco ALWAYS falls on his own. Thats his MO.

September 11, 2008  03:52 PM ET

It's better to bow out gracefully than to be shown out forcefully. I think he knows his role and can live with it. I hate to be the one to say it, but he really is the anti-Beckham in a lot of ways.

Blanco got called in so they could give him his swan song. I have no problems with what they did. It will be nice not to see him diving all over the pitch when the US are beating up on them.

How's that for making a statement? That pretty much tells you what he thinks of current management and Mexico's chances in the World Cup.

September 11, 2008  06:07 PM ET

Funny thing is he only played 4 minutes in his last game. I saw the game and Sven should have played Blanco more. Mexico simply had Canada the whole game. On another note, Sanchez should not start as GK. Ochoa is simply better than Oswaldo, and Sven needs to realize that Ochoa is going to have to gain 'experience' sometime sooner.

It was pretty funny when he fell. I was like "Oh crap he's gonna score. Go! Go! Go!Gggg...****?!?!" lol

The man says he's leaving on his own terms, but is he really. He barely gets any playing time and didnt even go to the world cup. He's a good player who sparks the team and crowd, but he's not going to be playing regularly so he saw no other choice.

Props to Rafa Marquez tho who handed Blanco the captains armband when he went in the game. Marquez is ALWAYS captain but gave it up because of what Cuau has done for Mexican soccer. He didnt have to. He couldve been like, F U! Ive accomplished more than u! but Marquez showed his respects. He gets a tip of the hat. Even Bravo, a chivas player, went to celebrate with Blanco after scoring.

Yea Oswaldo came out bad in the one play, but no one was covering anyone anyways. But I agree, Ochoa needs a chance to start. Maybe Mexico should be the first team to change goalies during the game.lol..have Oswaldo in the first and Ochoa in the second.lol

With Mexico passing thru for the next stage, i believe we will see more of Ochoa. Sven did not need any suspense in trying to get to the next stage and with that achieved, more playing experience would be forth coming for the rest of the players. Sanchez will in guide Ochoa and knows that his time, like Blanco, might be coming to an end. With the wealth of young talent Mexico needs to give them some experience but at the same time let the veterans exemplify what is expected of them and provide leadership. Thank you Blanco, as a player you have highlighted Mexican soccer and succeeded thru humble beginings.

How fitting! Blanco comes into the game in the 88th minute against Canada and gets a yellow 2 minutes later for diving. The 2nd yellow for diving the Mexican Natl. Team had that game.
When will they learn??
THANK YOU Mr. Referee.
That's what I'll remember him for, the cheater he is. Good ridance! Too bad we still have to put up with him in the MLS.

September 12, 2008  07:41 PM ET

Dude...he didnt dive. The man slipped. It's pretty obvious how he lost his balance. Even when he got up he was mad, and Guardado was tellin the ref that he slipped.

put up with him in MLS??...Aint it funny that we see more highlights of Blanco than Beckham or Angel. Shouldnt that make him the Most Valuabe Designated Player?lol

September 15, 2008  09:31 AM ET

philo you should count your blessings and be grateful that he is here in the MLS. The man is making MLS a more watchable league.

Temoc was a sparkplug for Mexico...........all fans appreciated his skills, he was probably the smartest player on the field when he was in the starting lineup I will miss him but i will still get to see him up in bridgeview with my fire......on a side note i saw something about sanchez somewhere and wanted to say this..........Ochoa has great reflexes but he is not ready and they have scored some idiotic goals that should have never gone in.......idk if you remember the final against Pachuca where he let those 2 terrible goals in........he will be the best one day but he needs more time maybe one more year for sanchez then you turn to memo
