Red Wings general manager Ken Holland has planned for this moment. With all but Darren McCarty's contract unresolved - and that should get done before training camp starts next week - Holland turn his attention toward the contracts he needs to work on for 2009. His biggest priority is getting a long-term contract done with Henrik Zetterberg, who will become a unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2009. Holland said he doesn't have any meetings scheduled yet to sit down with Zetterberg or his agent prior to training camp, but they know he's willing to talk any time.

Not much to comment on here. Seems obvious that both sides will want to get it done...and there is no indication that things won't go smoothly.

Just like he skates. When is the NHL going to wise up and put him, Ovechkin and Crosby in a commercial together?

Little pressure for Z here. Maybe he has a bad year and Holland turns to Hossa? Z and the mule need to keep performing..

September 11, 2008  10:44 AM ET

This is one guy the Wings don't want to let get to free agency.

September 11, 2008  10:55 AM ET

He'll sign during the season i would image. He's not going anywhere and Holland will make sure of that.

September 11, 2008  11:18 AM ET

Once Hossa leaves, a bit of money will be freed up to sign the Mule and Zetts. With the wizardry Holland performs Hossa maybe will stay for another year. God knows he doesn't want to go back to Pitt..

No kidding, if there is one organization that knows it should do everything it takes to keep such a player, it's the Wings.
joefordnproud, Holland's wizardry is largely helped by the organization success. Any GM could convince players ot take a cut when you're that successful - excpet maybe Brian "yeah, I'll sign you so I can screw up my cap" Burke.

The Wings and Z will get it done. Count on it!

Eh, what do we need to sign him for? He can go. Huh? That's my lawyer, hold on. Apparently I recently bought his jersey, so please sign Mr. Zetterberg. And I've also been told you won the Conn Smythe--congrats!

If it was anyone else but you my friend I would respond with one of my classless, negative and sarcastic replys but I won't !!!

No worries here, Hank will be a Wing for awhile

September 12, 2008  12:48 PM ET

Considering Zetterberg has said he'd like to remain a Red Wing...

In fact, the article where he talks about that might have mentioned how he'd like to remain with the Red Wings for his entire career.

I could easily see Zetterberg be the next Captain of the Wings in 2-4 years & retire with it.
