New Yorkers not buying NASCAR

They're supercharged heroes of NASCAR, a sport watched by more Americans than baseball or pro basketball. Jeff Gordon and fellow titans of stock-car racing rolled into Times Square Wednesday to showcase NASCAR's championship series, but found New York is a place where almost nobody knows their names. "I don't see the appeal in it except crashes," said Victoria Calas, 26, of Long Island. "It's a big left turn over and over." With the Jets, Giants, Mets, Yankees and Knicks, New Yorkers said they simply don't have the energy to focus on racing. "Few people would waste a New York minute watching NASCAR," said Alby Cohen, 29, of Brooklyn. Determined to change that, NASCAR officials say the sport has come a long way. "Every time we come here, we get more and more recognized," driver Jeff Burton said. "We've got to get out of the ... stereotype that it's what rednecks do in the South." Champion Jeff Gordon blamed the low popularity on the lack of a stock-car track in New York and bemoaned the failure of a proposal to build one on Staten Island a few years ago. "There are a lot of race fans in the area that would love to see it," Gordon said. Gordon and the other drivers appeared at the Hard Rock Cafe to promote the Chase for the Sprint Cup, NASCAR's premier championship.

I am quite sure there a lot of race fans in the city. Who are they interviewing? The naked cowboy? On the other hand.....dont do it Nascar. You have stuck the long time fans enough by moving races to indifferent sports cities ala California.

I think almost everyone in New York has heard of the drivers. They may not be big fans, but they've heard of them.

Can you imagine a Winnebago caravan from the south going up I-95 to new york city to watch a race?

September 11, 2008  08:45 AM ET

Nascar is a hard sell in New York and I don't even think if they were to build a track there it would make a difference.

They wouldn't know what to do with all the Friendly People from the South!
But they would soon learn what a "can of whoop ****" really is! LOL

I still can't figure out why NASCAR has their banquet in New York. It's like they are trying to hard to be accepted.

I agree, you would think they would hold in in the Heart of Nascar Country.

Who cares about getting noticed in New York! Why not take care of your ORIGINAL fan base that got you to where you are....why not pay respect to tradition and honor your sport's legacy and history...not destroy by trying to make as much $$$ as is humanly possible

This speaks volumes about the mentality of New Yorkers in regards to Nascar.

Because its the money that the sport needs to survive.

Jeff its these southern rednecks who pay your salary.

September 11, 2008  11:39 AM ET

Jeff B. actually has a point. Coupled with the fact that its much harder to get into Nascar than any other sport at a younger age, most of the drivers are from the south and the diversity issue all hinder Nascar from truly becoming a much bigger mainstream sport.

Maybe it just sounds 'better'. The Big Apple/NYC..etc., rather than the South. Who wants to have a banquet in their own backyard? At least there, you've got Time Square, etc. And who cares if anyone notices them...how many of you go to company parties during the holidays. Do YOU care if you get noticed? I'd rather be somewhere I'm not normally at and have some fun. I'm sure these guys are tired of signing autographs by years end, so they probably like the anonymity that NY has.

September 11, 2008  12:59 PM ET

It sure sounds like Jeff Burton wants anonymity, he seems to be getting too good for the good old boys. He will be running a Ritz Carlton car next year.

September 11, 2008  01:17 PM ET

Who cares....New York has the worst fans in the world. I am amazed they weren't throwing batteries and "Reggie" bars at them.

Anyone who will watch the Jets and Knicks should not be allowed to express an opinion on anything.
