Has OSU held back offense?

Jim Bollman couldn't stop laughing -- just another ploy, most likely, to avoid giving up Ohio State's secrets. "Now why should I tell you that?" the Buckeyes' offensive coordinator had answered Wednesday when asked how much of the offense Ohio State had been holding back the first two games of the season in order to surprise USC on Saturday. "I'm not going to divulge the whole game plan, no. I'd like to know their game plan. I'd say there's a little advantage to that." There certainly is. The question is: How far will a team go to throw off a future opponent? You can find conspiracy theories among fans in Buckeyeland who believe Beanie Wells' toe injury and subsequent alleged recovery are part of a plot to throw off the No. 1 Trojans. Having your best player fake an injury is probably a bit much. Yet because of the uncertainty around how much and how effectively Wells will play and exactly how the Buckeyes will or won't use freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor, there are a lot more questions about the offense than you'd expect from a team that returned nine offensive starters. As former Auburn coach Terry Bowden sees it, that's should be part of the plan when a national power opens against teams such as Youngstown State and Ohio.

The fans of OSU better sure hope so after last week...

This is pretty ridiculous...geez, another slow news day I bet.

How about using Occam's Razor here? (the simplest explanation is usually the best/correct explanation). Beanie hurt his foot, and while he'll likely be playing he probably won't be 100%.

As an aside, is anybody else disturbed by what's happening with "news"? Because we all bookmark and hit web pages, these sites have to be CONSTANTLY generating new "news" for us to read, and they further try to engage us with "add a comment" type of mechanisms...as a result our definition of "news" is getting more and more mundane and ridiculous, but like lemmings we continue to come back to the trough (apologies for the mixed metaphor).

And yes, I DO realize I'm griping about a blog ON a blog. Have a good day everybody.

Go Bucks! Go Boilers!

Oh God, I love the Buckeyes and believe they're more talented and experienced team than USC, but I don't think they're tricky, sneaky, in fact they're downright boring on offense and defense. No one is going to want Bollman or Heacock in the NFL.

I would choose Carol and his staff as a trade over the players. Tressel is great at preparing the kids for the pros and for life . Carol knows how to bring out the best in talented players in college, and surrounds himself with innovative coaches.

Ohio State is great at execution and they can "out-athlete" most teams , forcing the turnover. I doubt USC will make many mistakes in their home-opener, at night, in a place they've only lost once in 7 years.

Coach SweaterVest: "Oh good gosh golly, no we are darn tootin' doing our best on offense. We're just goshdarn lucky to gain a yard, I tell ya! I'm in such awe of USC I'm gonna have to vote for them as the #1 team in the land, and have our Sports Info guy really vote for us, cuz I'm as slimey as a used car salesman."

September 11, 2008  09:36 AM ET

At least they can't be accused of running up the score on a weaker opponent!

September 11, 2008  09:56 AM ET

Wow the writers must be bored to write this. Once again trying to create hype for the big game in two days. However I would not blame Tressel for doing that, we need every advantage for that game. USC is going to be tough.

September 11, 2008  10:03 AM ET

Slow news day in Cleveland. Maybe Well???s foot injury was faked or the Bucks played like crap against OU to improve the line. What a joke!

September 11, 2008  10:07 AM ET

What a bunch of BS...why would they sandbag it when you know damn well it will make you sink in the rankings by not playing well...face it OSU fans, you're team is not as good as USC and maybe not the best in the Big 10 this year...

September 11, 2008  10:21 AM ET

Bollman? I sure hope we have been .. holding back! Would you please for once just unleash all of this talent? Spread the field a bit - put Boeckman in the shotgun 90% of the time (you can still handoff to Beanie in the shotgun!!) .. and relay a message to this "great" offensive line and WR's!! WAKE UP!! Tell me we have more than Hartline on the outside! Sheesh! Unlike MANY .. I do feel we match up with USC well IF we show up! Bollman .. if not, I think it's time for Tressel to part ways with you!

September 11, 2008  10:24 AM ET

After week 2 of the season, USC has looked far better than OSU, against better competition. USC has all of last years tapes to look at as well since the majority of the players from offense returned.

I hate USC, but Pete carroll is dangerous when he has 2 weeks to prepare for you.

In the most respectful way possible, I am saying USC wins by 20+.

September 11, 2008  10:26 AM ET

i think sandbagging is part of the game but to fake an injury is stupid but i guess we will find out on sat.

September 11, 2008  10:28 AM ET

I am not sure they can fake an injury. If so, that would be bad sportsmanship............

September 11, 2008  10:35 AM ET

Why would they fake an injury? Wells needs to be as prepared as possible for USC since he is obviously their biggest threat on offense.

September 11, 2008  10:40 AM ET

The fake injury comment was a joke. Two weeks ago people on this site implied that the injury to Wells was faked since he was not touched on the play. I was being sarcastic.

September 11, 2008  10:46 AM ET

This is the biggest peice of garbage. I think OSU just had a bad game last week against a team they should have killed. Also remember to these small schools when they play a big time opponent this is their "superbowl" and they give it 150%. Dont take anything away from their performance. OU played their hearts out. Sat Buckeyes win by 17

September 11, 2008  10:50 AM ET

*piece

September 11, 2008  11:21 AM ET

This is only said to hype up the game that everyone knows USC will win... even the crazy OSU fans know... the reason they look bad against OU is simple... They aren't that good this year and I dont even see them winning their confrence... USC wins 42-10

September 11, 2008  11:29 AM ET

No. There were looking ahead but USC will be to quick for them.. should be an ugly game.

September 11, 2008  11:35 AM ET

What you think they held their offense back against LSU too, ugh. Stop making excuses, the fact is OSU almost lost to OHIO. I predict USC 31- OSU 17

September 11, 2008  11:44 AM ET

OSU will have to get the ball in Wells' hands @ least 20+ times in hopes of wearing down USC's speedy defense. OSU's offensive front must do a better job picking up blitzs and Boeckman needs to improve on his accuracy if they want to win this one...
