Will Carter demand Nets trade?

As the Nets began to decline (the '03 Finals appearance was followed by a second-round exit in '04 and a first-round sweep in '05) there appeared to be a rift forming between the core of the team -- namely Jason Kidd, Richard Jefferson and Vince Carter -- and management, specifically head coach Lawrence Frank and president Rod Thorn. Good players -- particularly big players -- were being allowed to leave with the Nets getting little or nothing in return. Kenyon Martin in '04. Mikki Moore in '07. The Nets expended draft pick after draft pick trying to replace them (Mile Ilic in 2005, Josh Boone in '06, Sean Williams in '07, Brook Lopez in '08). But to date, no one has been able to fill the holes. I know some players privately seethed about Frank's unwillingness to play and develop young players. And free agency? The Alonzo Mourning gamble didn't pay off and low budget free-agent pickups like Jeff McInnis and Jamal Magloire didn't pan out. With the talent being drained around them, the pressure on the Nets Big Three began to build. And it certainly didn't sit well with any of them when the critics blamed them for the Nets struggles, not when they were practically begging management to bring in some help. And to stop letting the talent that they had walk away. Does that rift still exist? I think so. Kidd and Jefferson are gone, but Carter is being asked to play hard for a team that: a.) doesn't expect to win for the next two years and b.) is subtly courting someone -- LeBron James -- to replace him. How long will it be before Carter demands a trade? Midseason?

Anyway, Carter should go to Europe. He will be much appreacited there because of his showtime.

Laughs,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,let him go

September 12, 2008  08:35 AM ET

He is the main man now so he has nobody to blame but himself. Demanding a trade would be his major downfall because he has done it before already. But you don't know. You put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig.

LOL pro sleeper....

In all seriousness. The nets are in a rebuilding mode..If I were Carter I would want out too, although Vinsanitys skills are clearly in decline

Not really! But it seems like it's the right time to say that quote. Okay let me make something up. "You cannot put spots on a zebra?"

The last piece of the puzzle to remove to clear the way for Lebron.... give in and trade him Nets! All you gotta get back is a cart of used basketballs

September 12, 2008  10:06 AM ET

I said it once before, even though he doesn't do a whole lot of things great, he is good in almost everything else that pertains to basketball except defend. With that said, NJ is trying to clear up cap room, and Cleveland is in a win now situation, and Wallace, Snow, #1, for Carter,Swift is not out of the question. I know the Cavs got Mo WIlliams because he scored with the Bucks, but when the got Hughes he was fresh off a season when he averaged 22ppg. Carter is a legit scorer and that is what Lebron needs, another legit scorer.

September 12, 2008  10:21 AM ET

Why will the nets send Carter to help Lebron in Cleveland when they are trying to motivate him to leave Cleveland.... so bad Reed.. it won't happen... The nets need a show man to sell tickets.. That's when Carter comes in... he is being used but hey he is getting millions to do that... when his contract is up he can definitely join a championshio team for cheap...

This article is called "Will Carter demand Nets trade?", but talks about everything else but that, save the last line...

Well, in response to the title, yes, Carter will demand a trade after the 08-09 season. If the Nets continue to tank, Carter will whine, profess "no more dunking...", and bring down team morale as he is the franchise player. After next season, and next summer (minus LeBron), Carter will demand out of New Jersey....

The Nets made a huge mistake in (1) giving Carter the huge contract, and (2) trading everybody else not named Carter. It will be tough to trade him anywhere as it is no secret in the league that Carter is 'soft', and not a leader, while being paid to be otherwise.

Jeez Guam!!! Don't they teach you in school?? You are soooo sexist!!!!
Sarah just called me after looking at your comments, and she's heart broken. She swore to remove the lipstick from the lip and put it on her forehead!!

Once the Nets find out that this current team is neither competitive nor can play a lick of defence I suspect Carter will be shopped and move at the mid season trading deadline. Cleveland allegedly offered Szerbiak straight up in a salary swap--one year left--but the Nets declined. You won't get a Kidd package back as they did from Dallas but I think Carter will have some value to some teams based on where they are around the break. I'd expect to get expiring contract(s) back on duds plus a pick--maybe a 1 or maybe a couple of 2s. Either way, the Nets are stuck unless Thorn pulls another heist for an alleged star.

I guess you are one of those people who reacts w/out knowing the whole truth. That comment wasn't for Sarah if you even listened to the whole speech. It was for McCain's economic plan. These kind of people are the true sexist because they want to twist the truth. What a negative campaigning. And McCain used the same comment this year and previous years. I guess you need to be in school yourself and teach you some manner. Did they teach to lie, twist the truth, and make everybody look bad but yourself.

September 12, 2008  12:25 PM ET

And to tell you the truth, Sarah is very cute and very pleasing to the eyes. She is not a pig. She maybe the saviour to the McCain campaign.

September 12, 2008  01:12 PM ET

And it actually turns out that McCain was the first person to use that phrase..... when discussing Hillary's health care plan during the Clinton administration... go figure, right?

September 12, 2008  01:23 PM ET

Thanks Buffalo TF for having my back. McCain actually used it about 4-5 times and it's on tape.

Carter carter carter what can i say well he had a good dunk on mourning other than that what has he done: wants 2 be the main guy but cant lead a team 2 the finals by himself, the next generation of stars like LBJ & Wade would not want 2 play with such a moron.
