Don't believe those text messages you get from Red Wings Mobile News. Red Wings vice president Steve Yzerman is not coming out of retirement in November, despite a text message that is being sent to PDAs and mobile phones. The Red Wings' Web site offers a mobile news service that claims to deliver "the latest on Red Wings' players and upcoming events, while also providing up-to-the-minute scores, game recaps and box scores." A Free Press reporter signed up for the service Thursday night after receiving a tip from a reader. The fifth message received said: "Breaking news. Steve Yzerman will come out of reitrement and return to the ice in Mid November. Come to the Joe to catch the action!" Team spokesman John Hahn replied to an e-mail seeking information about the text message Thursday night and wrote: "I can't speak to the text system issue, but Steve is definitely not coming out of retirement."

What? Is Gordie Howe too busy working the collector show circuit?

September 12, 2008  07:48 AM ET

Steve, you are the man. You are not the Favre.

September 12, 2008  08:10 AM ET

He has no reason to come out of retirement. He has proven everything he needs to prove and he knows that. I dont think his knees could take the beating either.

September 12, 2008  08:49 AM ET

Stevie has already done everything he needs to. Redwing for life, hero for life.

Thanks again Stevie Y.

September 12, 2008  09:12 AM ET

Yeah, this is one of the stupider rumors I've seen on this site. Stevie Y is an icon in Detroit, and with them winning the Cup (again) there's no reason for him to play again. As biminatior said, he's done everthing he needs to .

September 12, 2008  09:26 AM ET

The strangest thing about this T&R rumor is that they didn't try to relate it to Mats Sundin in any way.

Which is good.

Stevie Y and ______________ should never be mentioned in the same sentence.

September 12, 2008  09:38 AM ET

Agreed^ YODA

September 12, 2008  10:15 AM ET

Actually Yoda, Stevie sent me a message about why he is coming back. "I am lacing them up once again so I can come back an punch Mats Sundin in the mouth. Even if I have to join a Swedish team. What an a- hole.

End quote. Damn English degree.

September 12, 2008  10:48 AM ET

When will people in Detroit learn about text messaging and the trouble it can cause? Besides, Yzerman is too young to come out of retirement right now. He wants to wait until Chelios turns 50 in a few years.

September 12, 2008  10:55 AM ET

Oh it's just simple text messages, it's nothing to get excited about. Sorry, my lawyer's here again. The mayor of Detroit did what? Oh...my bad. I guess text messages are dangerous.

Actually, since we're on the subject of text messages and damage done, I had an ex go through my text messages...on Christmas morning...at her parent's house. It did not go well.

September 12, 2008  11:16 AM ET

Glad to see my wife isnt the only woman to go through text messages.

September 12, 2008  11:41 AM ET

I fail to see how Steve Yzermans not coming out of retirement helps Mats Sundin with the critical decision of oatmeal or corn flakes.

September 12, 2008  11:44 AM ET

solorunner - What you fail to see is how it DOESN'T help M**S S****N's breakfast query. It's pretty obvious. So obvious, in fact, that I'm not even going to explain the connection. You should just know.

September 12, 2008  11:45 AM ET

As a sidenote, the new T&R sucks. The layout was way better before when you could easily jump from one story to the next.

September 12, 2008  11:54 AM ET

The only thing worse than this layout would be another Sundin story.

Has he made up his mind yet?

September 12, 2008  12:28 PM ET

Yes the new format does suck. Do what I did...take out your frustrations on the IT guy at your place. I keep smacking our guy in the head every time he walks by. It makes me feel better.

The leafs will make the play-offs!

After watching Steve climb up his stick to get back on his feet his last two seasons, text makes no sense. I would like to see if he has it behind the bench though
