Packers may hold Grant out

Ryan Grant may very well end up playing against the Detroit Lions on Sunday at Ford Field, but the decision by coach Mike McCarthy and the medical staff to hold the Green Bay Packers' featured back out of practice Wednesday and Thursday wasn't just to give Grant's troublesome hamstring a rest. McCarthy gave reporters the distinct impression after Thursday's practice that there's at least some chance that the Packers will hold Grant out of the game so he doesn't turn the hamstring injury into a season-long issue or, in the worst-case scenario, tear it and wind up missing several weeks. McCarthy said Grant will go through "a portion" of practice today, then "we'll test it and we'll know where he stands Saturday morning."

Packers are going to need a running game if they plan on beating high-scoring Lions.

never fails, pay a back, watch a back have an injury season..

As long as they don't sign Turner....

ain't that the truth.

without grant, and with how lousy brandon jackson looked last week, it could be tough for the packers to beat the lions...rodgers is gonna have to air it out a lot more... kitna is a heckuva lot better qb than t-jack...

Don't play him! If the Lions win, it will be because of pure luck. And that luck won't hold out until the end of the season, so its not like the Lions will be contenders.

Save Grant for the games that really count.

The pack could hold the whole team out and still beat the Lions.

September 12, 2008  11:19 AM ET

Though it would hurt my fantasy team, if there was a game for Grant to miss, the Lions would be it.

They have to be eyeing the Dallas game.
The Packers have a good shot at beating the Lions without Grant, but they'll need him strong if they want to keep that Cowbiys O off the field.

If they do keep him out, I'd like to see them start Kregg Lumpkin (#3 guy). In preseason he looked like a stud and was worth keeping over two vets. I would love to see how he does with a full game.

Right...the same Lions that lost to the Falcons

I agree! The Packers could beat Detroit by 20 without Grant and probably 20 with him. The lions would do better of they treid to get Barry Sanders out of retirement (but I think NOT).

They should hold Grant out and let him heal. The Packers have a greater foe the next week after the Lions.

September 12, 2008  04:48 PM ET

I'd like to see Lumpkin play too. He was good at UGA, but missed a lot of time because of various injuries. According to reports he might be the man this week with Grant (hamstring) and Jackson (concussion) possibly being sidelined.

September 12, 2008  10:21 PM ET

I would play him if there is no likelihood of the injury getting worse. EVERY game is important. How often does home field advantage come down to just one game....

September 13, 2008  02:06 AM ET

If things get really bad I suppose they could try to sign Sean Alexander. He is still out there right?

September 13, 2008  12:20 PM ET

this wont affect the packers smothering the lions

Roy, they didn't have a running game today and they still won 48-25.
