Beanie may still play against USC

Jim Tressel was hoping for the best with Beanie Wells today. He didn't get it. Ohio State's No. 1 running back did not practice Thursday morning after experiencing too much soreness after practicing Wednesday afternoon. Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said he considers Wells doubtful for Saturday's game against USC. Tressel's hope was that Wells would improve after practicing Wednesday night at about 75 percent, thinking he might get closer to 90 percent. Wells carried the ball about 20 times without getting hit Wednesday in his first real practice since injuring his right foot at the base of his big toe against Youngstown State on Aug. 30. Tressel said if Wells' soreness continues Friday, they could make a decision to hold him out before gametime. Ohio State has a walkthrough planned in Los Angeles on Friday, but Tressel said the trainers could put Wells through some drills to test him again.

In a continuation of this story Coach Tressel may wear a sweater vest at the game. Beanie will paly, no doubt.

We will have to wait and see. Even at 50% he would still be dangerous

Beanie may or may not play. Also, sky is blue and water is wet. News at 11.

This is like a soap opera. To play or not to play.

secishorrible,

What kind of name is that? Are you bitter?

If he doesn't play he can kiss any chance of the Hiesman goodbye!

September 12, 2008  09:25 AM ET

This is officially a media ploy.
Beanie is going to suit up and be on the field for the first offensive possession. If he cant go he wont continue. No way they dont at least give him a chance to play, he's OSU's only hope of winning, and even that hope is bleak.

i agree he will suit up. But I don't think he is our only shot at winning. If Boeckman can get the offense roused we have a shot. BUT if he doesn't then we are done. We need a leader.

He will play but it will be ugly..

September 12, 2008  09:35 AM ET

If Beanie doesn't play, obviously, it'll be much harder for OSU to win. However, I do expect this to be a low scoring affair. USC simply will not put up the points everything thinks they will. OSU is not Virginia.

The eve of collegiate football's judgement day. I can't wait!

September 12, 2008  09:57 AM ET

Wells will play.

Wells is not 100%.

So if OSU wins, they are good enough to beat USC with Wells not being 100%. If they lose, it's because Wells is not 100%.

All you pollsters out there - you have to vote them back to the NC game. Get it?

September 12, 2008  10:00 AM ET

if OSU loses its because they are not good.... if they win they just got lucky... but we all know that wont happen

September 12, 2008  10:04 AM ET

Without Beanie on the field OSU???s D has to sack Sanchez or pressure Sanchez into making mistakes. This will be the defining factor of the game.

LOL

Good prediction! ;)

Beanie's participation is critical for OSU, he could be the difference in losing by 28 and losing by 21. They need him there to make the game look semi-respectable! :D

I disagree. I don't like USC or OSU, but I know this much: the spread is going to be 17+ with USC on top. Welcome to reality.

Another Tressel special..ala claiming he voted for TX as #1 before they played them. They are using this to their advantage. For all we know Wells could have been getting along just fine and could show up and play..or pull a "fake" Willis Reed.....

I get a kick out of how everyone (media) seems to think that OSU's effectiveness hinges on their offense. Of course they're better with Wells, but the game will be won or lost with OSU's defense. I can't think of a better example of this than the Miami national title game. OSU's offense that year was mediocre at best, but they showed that if you have a good D you're going to be in every game. I'm not saying that they will be able to handle USC's offense, but I wouldn't be shocked if OSU kept it close all the way simply because of their defense. It's pretty boring, but usually effective.
