Bold moves in Rockies' future?
Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd is faced with the offseason challenge of providing an infusion that will allow a team with a solid core to return to contention next year. Given the failure of this season, it will open the door for O'Dowd to be more daring than he was last year and puts the Rockies in position to shake the baseball world with a couple daring moves. The Rockies seem resigned to the fact that left fielder Matt Holliday, eligible for free agency after next season, and third baseman Garrett Atkins, a free agent after 2010, will test the open market. Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, outfielder Brad Hawpe and pitchers Jeff Francis, Aaron Cook and Manny Corpas signed long-term deals likely for less than what would be available on the open market but do provide financial security and a chance to stay in Colorado. Given the situation, the Rockies would be wise to consider trading both Holliday and Atkins in the offseason. Ian Stewart has shown he can handle third base. And if nothing else, Ryan Spilborghs and Seth Smith could become a left-field platoon.

I think they would get a haul for Holliday, although I think his numbers would drop significantly away from Coors

Yanks again will be having a good amount of salary coming off the books after next year as well as getting rid of a log jam in the outfield

"I think they would get a haul for Holliday, although I think his numbers would drop significantly away from Coors"
It's funny how people always think that if any good player ever leaves colorado and coors field, they instantly suck. That doesn't seem to be the case, look at good players like Vinny Castilla, Pierre and Larry Walker they were very succesful with Atlanta, Dodgers and St. Louis b/c they are good players. Matt Holliday is a top ten player in the MLB at coors or any other ballpark, only ignorant fans say stuff like this. How about Jimmy Rollins, chase Utley and all of the left handed batters in Phillies line up, why are they not overrated? If any of you watch Phillies games you all know that the right field fence is 315 ft. and where do most of jrolls and utley's HR's come at? right over that 315 feet mark. What a joke.

Now you will probably tell me that the Rockies only won twenty games IN A ROW b/c they played at Coors field. And Really about 14 of those 20 in a row came on the road. IDIOTS.

No, I don't think that, FCL. Just look at Holliday's splits home and away in average and power numbers.
Castilla was never as successful away from Coors as he was there, and yes I know he had a big year for the Braves. Pierre isn't a power hitter, so his comparison is pointless. Walker was an incredible 5-tool player before he ever got to Colorado.....and continued to be that in St Louis for a year and a half.
I'm not trying to diss Holliday....I think he is a tremendous hitter, but I do get leery of guys who have only played in Coors because his numbers won't be quite as good someplace else.

TenRingsSTL... I think that the reason that we FCLucho got upset about hearing that is that we just grow tired of the the national stigma of Colorado. It's not just baseball, it's other sports too. We are called a "small market", even though Colorado is actually the biggest market in the US as far as drawing power is concerned. We can't help the fact that we're not LA or NY. It's funny, too, because a majority of the guys in the national media have worked or played in Denver at some point in their careers (Mark Schlereth, Eric Young, Tom Jackson, Bill Williamson, Woody Paige, etc.).
Another thing that we get tired of hearing is that somebody is a "product of Coors Field". While that may have been true 5 years ago, that rule doesn't exactly apply today. The advent of the humidor where the baseballs are stored has turned Coors Field into a rather normal baseball park. Averages will still be somewhat inflated because of the expansive outfield, but the field plays a lot like any other park in baseball. The funny thing is that a lot of voters voted for Jimmy Rollins over Matt Holliday in the MVP race last year simply because Holliday plays at Coors Field. That argument doesn't hold any water, though, because Citizens' Bank Park in Philadelphia is statistically the best offensive park in the Majors. They also don't apply the same argument for pitchers. If a hitter's statistics can be discounted for playing in Coors Field, then a pitcher winning 17-18 games with a 3.90 ERA should be a unanimous Cy Young Award Winner. There is a double-standard there. For some reason, there is just a disdain in the media for Colorado that is permeated throughout professional sports because all that fans see of Colorado is the little bit of lip-service that we get on ESPN.
Sorry for the rant, but it really does get annoying. And FCLucho, glad to see a local on here. I'm from Windsor, but that's right next door to Evans.

Holliday is perfect for the Rockies and that park. Give him a big deal, and keep the young pitchers coming. This is a quality young team .

The big problem for Holliday is that his agent is Scott Boras. Boras never wants his clients to resign with their current team. Boras always wants to stick it to MLB, even for just $1.00 difference. Yes, players can ignore his advice, after all A-Rod resigned with the Yankees for only $275 million plus incentives that make his total contract worth north of $300 million. He "fired" Boras before resigning and then "re-hired" him after signing. WINK WINK. I would love to see Holliday sign a nice long term extension to stay in Colorado. Time will tell - yet with his agent the Rockies are not counting on it.

Hey WT..... I understand where you are coming from......I sometimes feel the same type of national media bias against STL, too. No intent to offend, and I certainly don't consider Holliday a product of Coors.....I was just trying to say that his overall numbers are much better at home.....so someone paying big bucks or big prospects for him should consider that. So, WT, FCL......please know that I have no Colorado bias........
I'd like the Cardinals to go after Holliday, personally.
