Why Blackhawks traded Lang

The Blackhawks solved their salary cap issues and shifted focus onto younger players Friday when they traded veteran center Robert Lang. The Hawks sent Lang and his $4 million salary to the Montreal Canadiens for a second-round draft pick in 2010. The 37-year-old, entering the final season of his contract, had 21 goals and 33 assists in 76 games last season. Lang's departure puts the onus on youngsters, most notably Dave Bolland and Petri Kontiola, to develop into contributing centers. "We're very happy with the direction we're headed," Hawks general manager Dale Tallon said. "Our young guys have taken great steps this off-season conditioning-wise. We have so many young players that sooner or later we have to open the door for them."

This might come back to bite the in the arse. But Tallon has been correct alot of the time when bringing up the kids.Bolland was a beast for the London Knights in junior and I'm hoping he gets that scoring knack back for the Hawks.

Go Hawks!

Don't know about the guys replacing him, but Lang is a good player...not worth 4 million anymore IMO. He will help Montreal with his leadership and grit. I thought they could get more than a second round pick though.

Montreal has a pretty great looking defense heading into this season.

I agree with you LGP Lang isn't worth 4 mill anymore. He will be good in Montreal though. It's a good move for both teams.

Look at his age.......Not getting much in return. But maybe this is what is needed

September 13, 2008  11:55 AM ET

as much as i did like him last year as a leader to this team of youngsters....you need a true veteran leader..which is why i think it was a mistake to make toews a captain..you need sharp as an alternate captain....

but langs age was getting up there and he's no gretzky, and definiteily no lemieux...you cant go forever...and he's nothing special

This is not good news for the Bruins.

Montreal is really going all out with the Thirty somethings this year, which should come back to bite them in the arse. I love where the Bruins and the Blackhawks are headed. Toews will be an excellent captain for years to come.

I'd rather the B's face him instead of the Big Swede. It'll be interesting though.

The leafs will make the play-offs!

First of all lang has no grit. For a guy of his size he as is soft as they come. Dont get me wrong, he is a good player, but definitely replaceable.

Next, a captain doesnt have to be a veteran. Meteora must not follow the blackhawks much because if he did he wouldve heard that toews is a vocal leader in the locker room and everyone on the team looks up to him and respects him. He has maturity beyond his age, remember the we have to hate to lose quote? That was coming from a 19 year old kid. the thing is if you are not in the locker room, then you cant make the best assessment of who should wear the C

I like Toews as captain. He may be young but he is the face and future of the franchise. The Blackhawks are going with the youth movement so why not a young but very mature young captain.

September 13, 2008  07:39 PM ET

I can see why they traded Lang in the midst of their youth movement, but who do they expect to act as a leader to give the youngsters soem advice?
Plus, couldn't get better than a 2nd round pick? Lang wasn't too bad last season?

The Hawks have a plethora of talents, yet pay almost 13 million to a pair who play a combined 30 games per season. They may be lethal next year when Khabibulin and Havlat go to free agency.

Speaking of Toews how old was Yzerman when he was named captain ??...Toews will be great

Your right on the money! The Hawks need to rid themselves of an aging "Wall" and the Havlat's made of glass arse.
