Braves will seek two starting pitchers

Braves manager Bobby Cox was asked Friday what it would take to get the Braves back to being a playoff contender in 2009. "Pitching, pitching and more pitching," he said. "Good pitching will cover up a lot of other points. When you don't have [pitching], everything else becomes critical." The Braves believed they had strong pitching when they left spring training, but veteran starters John Smoltz and Tom Glavine and top relievers Peter Moylan and Rafael Soriano all had early arm injuries that required surgery. Mike Hampton also missed the first half of the season with more injuries. In hindsight, the Braves relied too much on over-40 starting pitchers, a mistake they don't plan to repeat in 2009. Cox said they intend to add two quality starting pitchers this winter, via free agency or trade.

They ought to beg Leo Mazzone to come back first..... I don't recall this many injuries under his watch.

yeah got out and sign one pitcher to 20 million dollars like CC and they still will finish in 3rd place. How about signing a burnett at a cheaper price and signing a couple more middle relievers for the pen. Maybe go after a derek lowe type as well. Its just stupid to put all your free agent money into one pitcher when they have 6 to 7 holes to fill.

Mazzone would be a good thought. He was superb as the pitching coach.

The Braves are in need of serious pitching help.

September 13, 2008  01:41 PM ET

Why did the Braves let Mazzone leave?

September 13, 2008  02:35 PM ET

Pitching worked for years when they were good...why re-invent the wheel?

Just do SOMETHING to make Cox take that constant grimmace off his face, it hurts my eyes just to look at him.
