Why Bayern passed on Donovan

As you might have heard earlier this week from the Washington Post, Bayern Munich had discussions with Major League Soccer about Landon Donovan. Here is what I have been told. Apparently Juergen Klinsmann was very interested in adding Donovan, but the Bayern board of directors wasn't keen on buying a player who is perceived to have twice washed out of the Bundesliga. This led to a discussion between Bayern and Los Angeles about a loan deal with an option to buy. Neither the Galaxy or MLS was interested in that. What next? Bayern is expected to make a transfer offer this winter. As for Donovan? He was ready to make the move and is prepared to join Bayern Munich if a deal can be struck this winter.

What the hell is Klinsman thinking?!?!? Stop taking medicore players when you have the money to have proper world class players. LD is terrible, and wouldn't serve a purpose considering the midfield that Bayern already have! If he couldn't handle the pressure at the lower BL teams, how is he supposed to be good at FC Hollywood?

Sheed, IF there's ANY truth to this at all, doesn's it make you question the recent updates on Ribery's condition and his pending return? I wouldn't call LD "terrible", but doesn't this move have a quick fix "band-aid" feel to it? Just something temporary until Franck is ready to return? I've had a hard time buying that he would be ready to come back that quickly...

we must not be so hard on ld , but as i told some friends he can be a usefull player, now it's time to back up the player and pray that bayern gone be patient.

the bundesliga it's not whhat it used to be, landon can play without any problem.

September 13, 2008  01:36 PM ET

Bayerns midfield is this:
Kroos- absolute great talent and has shown it
Ottl- a good dm
Von Bommel- your pitbull that will take on anybody
Schweinsteiger- amongst the top players at the EC
Poldi (has been used as winger)
Ribery- no reason he won't be back to his old self in two weeks
Altintop- the MVP of the Turks, and a great all around mf, very unselfish
Ze Roberto- great holding mf
Sosa- jury is still out, but did win gold with argentina

and now you wanna add in ld he isn't even in the top 8 between those players

Bayern are so deep they don't need a band-aid

Landon Donovan is terrible? Let's be realistic here

September 13, 2008  02:20 PM ET

Rasheed, I am a fan of Brazilian soccer. They have about 100 players better than most of the ones you listed. And they all say that Landon Donovan can sure play. I am not a fan of LD but I have seen him play and he is very good. How can you call him terrible?

September 13, 2008  03:48 PM ET

Yea Landon Donovan isnt so bad. I should know. I follow La Seleccion Mexicana. He's like our kryptonite. lol

September 13, 2008  04:50 PM ET

he's good in games that don't count and in the MLS because its still a d-league competition compared to Europe. LD only showed up as a player when he wasn't the leader, only when he had other players to fall on. He was absolutely terrible, at the WC in 06, he repeatedly missed goal scoring chances and didn't atone for them. In the BL he was absolutely terrible, and he ran back home like a little schoolgirl

September 13, 2008  05:42 PM ET

Of course we're going to see a slew of "Know-it-All" foreign soccer "experts" chime in here griping about Landon's quality and a million other stupid comments when the reality is that, had he been given a decent chance (something nearly impossible to get in overseas soccer for any talented American), he'd probably have done just fine.

Landon, you seriously don't need to go play in the boring Bundesliga, anyway, we appreciate you here just fine. :)

September 13, 2008  06:37 PM ET

Not a complete Landy hater but I understand what the Bayern board is thinking. He twice ran from Germany. No need for their to be a third time.

He can play overseas, for he is good enough, but he needs to look at another league.

September 13, 2008  07:02 PM ET

overseas Ld is bench worthy but i dont see him starting on any Euro league team...good enough to play but not good enough to start anywhere across the pond...

September 13, 2008  07:03 PM ET

probably the only american player that could come close to starting overseas...

September 13, 2008  08:20 PM ET

IN EUROPE EVERY TEAM PLAY A DIFFERENT TACTICS AND DEPENDING ON THE TACYICS BUILT BY THE COACH THEY R GOING TO BUY PLAYER THAT FIT THE TACTICS PLAY IT IS LIKE THAT IN EUROPE LD IS NOT WELL KNOWN IN EUROPE BUT IN THE STATE HE IS # 1 SO IF KLINSMANN THINK THAT LD GOT A PLACE IN HIS TEAM TACTICS LD WILL BE ADD BAYERN DON'T HAVE BIG NAME IN ANY POSITIONS IN THE GAME LOOK AT THE PLAYER LIST U WON'T SEE A 20MILLION EURO PLAYER IN THEIR LIST SO THEY DON'T GOT BIG NAMES BUT THEY GOT PLAYERS WHO HAVE A DREAM TO BECOME GREAT PLAYER, AND , IN EUROPE TO BE RECOGNISE U MUST LIGHT IN UR LEAGUE AND THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, SO LD IS A WORKER HE CAN PLAY IN ANY TEAM IN THE BUNDESLIGA RIGHT NOW.

September 13, 2008  11:31 PM ET

Rtasheed--if I had any pull here I would have you banned from this blog... If you think LD is "terrible" you are truly a moron, despite WC06. Another amatuer chiming in about something he doesn't know.

I am surprised that the board rejected the move, but Klinsmann is no idiot and has a very attacking style of play in mind. LD would work off the bench or against certain teams. Still, I wish he would go elsewhere.

Similiarly, Rrasheed should ply his amatuer critique on players elsewhere. I'm just sick of people saying stupid things on this site. He is far from terrible. From soneone who has traveled the globe, played compettive futbol, I can tell you than no team in Europe thinks LD is terrible. Learn your futbol, or take a hike. And I have never said this about anyone on this site. I am just ttotally bored with this cliche crap from amatuer critics.

September 13, 2008  11:35 PM ET

Oh, I am sorry Rrashhed, you're from Aruba, a futbol island mecca off the shore of South America, and home of folks who watch and follow US soccer players across the world and would therefore know that LD is "terrible." I think not. Please revise your tired, played-out statement, or continue to look uniformed. If you want to look like an ignorant fool. Fine.

September 14, 2008  12:36 AM ET

the only question I have is who is this "Ives" guy and who the heck is he talking to. Caught the 1st Bayern game on tv, and after watching Galaxy game tonight, no way
LD is a good player, but if he was good enough to play for Bayern he would be dominating MLS
that LA/KC tonight was autrocious
I know we're all supposed to support the MLS, but after watching EPL/Bundesliga/La Liga all morning, and then that crap in the afternoon, its really tough, no way is LD good enough to play on a Champions League(or even UEFA cup) team, no way, maybe a middle tier French or Bundesliga team

September 14, 2008  12:38 AM ET

D-Wreck maybe it's time you face the fact that LD WILL NEVER GO TO THE BUNDESLIGA LEAGUE OR EPL. I say agian maybe the LA LIGA, French lige, start in Serie B, Portuguese lige, and Dutch Eredivise. Dude just stop making a fool of yourself when it comes to LD.

September 14, 2008  12:58 AM ET

LD is decent and that's as far as it goes. D-Wreck you need to calm down. People are entitled to their opinions. I think the opportunity for LD to play competitively in Europe is gone. At best he may play on a middle to lower tiered team in the French league, Dutch league, or Portuguese league.

September 14, 2008  01:34 AM ET

I have been saying that for ages! (That he can play for a middle level Euro team!)... I have never endoresed the idea that LD should goto Bayern. Ever. I think you guys (Chucky cheese, Jab00 in the eye) need to be around long enough to know what has been said before. I have always stated that LD should play at a mid level Euro team. And FINALLY, if you would confirm that LD is not "terrible." Period. End of Story, And if you guys can't figure that out, then maybe you need to read my post again. Re-study futbol. He (chucky cheese--the real FOOL here) can have his stupid opinion and I can have one based on facts. I am sick and tired of hearing how horrible LD is... The total crap known as the Galaxy is not his fault. Can you put two decent players, and surround them with total crap and expect them to perform at the top of their game? Yet LD is still scoring oodles of goals in the MLS regardless of the fact that he's playing sub quality teamates outside of Beckham. i realize people are allowed to have an opinion--and my opinion is this: if you think LD is terrible, then you don't know squat about futbol Squat. Period. Tell me to "calm down" if that makes you're opinion feel more educated. I'm telling you to read the post. LD in NOT a "terrible" player. Sorry. You're both wrong and frankly, you both are the fools.

September 14, 2008  01:41 AM ET

Pawn" Ps. Yes the game was atrocious. Hardly LDs fault though. Surroung a good player with other good players and things do improve dramatically. Beckham alone is not the solution for the sorry case that is the Galaxy.

Jab00, sorry to stab at you so. After re-reading your post, it really wasn't too far off from what I was saying. But PS, I am allowed to have my opinion as well. And that's just what mine was--realizing of course that I have no power to stop others from having their own. And when I wrote that, I WAS calm.
