Why Beanie won't play today

When Ohio State climbed off four charter buses at the Coliseum just after 5 p.m. local time Friday, Beanie Wells walked in with his teammates, looking like another Buckeye ready for the battle of the season. Forty minutes later, after the team walkthrough, OSU coach Jim Tressel announced that Wells would not be joining his teammates on the field tonight against No. 1 USC. "He would cut his foot off for these guys, but I just don't think, as I listen to the medical people, (playing him) would be the right thing to do," Tressel said. "I'm not sure he'll ever speak to me again, but I think it's the right thing to do." Tressel made it sound as if he, not the medical staff, made the final decision, saying of Wells, "If looks could kill, he fought me."

Not to knock OSU, but I don't think they can win this one without Beanie. It's a shame he can't play.

Good morning boy's and girl's

We finally made it. It's the 13th of September and we know what that means. Judgement day.

Just a reminder

IF OSU is going to win a game against USC or to go on and win a championship it will be by the defense. Just look back at the 2002 OSU NC team...mostly defense and a quarterback that didn't hurt you. We still have a shot today...but we need two to three turnovers without turning the ball over ourselves. We will also have to get points off those turnovers. let's hope for great weather, good officiating and no injuries.

OSU has to put pressure on Sanchez to win this game.

Yes I clearly remember 2002. Mediocre offense and phenomenal defense. This game will be won in the trenches. Good luck Buckeyes, b/c lord knows you need it!

I still say Beanie is going to play..... (praying) hopefully.

September 13, 2008  11:16 AM ET

I am always torn when OSU battles a power house form another conference. I think I have to go ahead and hope that the Big Ten can shut everyone up today... I think I have to root for the evil empire...

i think Tressel is trying to mess with usc's players and coaching staff, i think he realizes that USC has the better team. as smart as he is he will try anything to give his team the upper hand.on the other hand wells is there best player on offence no doubt, if he plays today and gets hurt even worse everybody will blame tressel for letting him play. Tressel realizes that this game is early enough if they lose they still have a chance for a BCS Game if they play wells today and lose him for the season they have no chance.

I agree. In the end I'd rather have him later on in the season and further in the future, rather than have him ending up more injured.

Is Jimmy T. officially laying down? Say it isn't so.

Is it me or is the suspense fizzling out of this 1?

Tressel knows he can't screw up Beanie's future.

Off the subject - Did anyone see the Maryland DB smack Cals running back on the screen pass!!! WOW - hit him soo hard the Cal guy pucked on the field.

It's obvious that Tressel already knows he's going to lose today. So by keeping Beanie out he's got a good excuse for the voters for a possible rematch after OSU whips up on the weak Big Ten.

It's obvious that Tressel already knows he's going to lose with or without Beanie. By holding him out at least he's got an excuse for the voters. Maybe it will entice them into letting OSU back into a possible rematch in the BCS after they win in the weak BigTen.

Yep there will be a rematch in the Rose Bowl after a PAC10 team drops USC. Then maybe Beanie will be healthy for that game.

O M G We're missing the Butler/Franklin game!!!

Sorry. 7pm isn't getting here fast enough. How 'bout those 'Twerps!

September 13, 2008  04:25 PM ET

Give em Hell, Purdue is having their way with the PAC 10, lets keep it going.

September 13, 2008  04:35 PM ET

Michigan is looking solid today.

September 13, 2008  04:37 PM ET

If Penn State can keep 22 players out of jail they might be pretty good this year.
