Why WVU extended Stewart
West Virginia took another step in moving forward with the Bill Stewart era. West Virginia athletic director Ed Pastilong announced Friday that the first-year head coach signed a six-year contract with the Mountaineers. Coach Stewart has worked tirelessly to assemble a staff, recruit an outstanding class of student-athletes and prepare for the season," Pastilong said. "With most terms and conditions agreed to in June, it was a matter of both parties reviewing the document before signing the agreement. I like the staff that he has assembled, and I look forward to Coach Stewart's continued leadership." The contract announcement came nearly a week after West Virginia (1-1) was upset by East Carolina.

Excellent news. That's one LESS team filling the New Year's Day bowl schedule for the next six years.

Not a smart thing to do after a loss, wait a season.

Maybe they're extending him to save $$$ to hire Nick Saban in a year or 2. Just sayin'.

I was a little surprised to see Coach Stewbeing offered a lengthy contract so early in his tenure. Before doing so, I would have chosen to wait a season, thereby making HIM EARN IT! What if he goes 6-6 or 7-5? And the same average win-loss record persists next year. Then, they might be sorry for acting hastily.

I couldn't agree Moore. I see no mention of a pay raise or anything monetary in said T&R article. Does anybody know something we don't or is my Saban theory now somewhat plausible?

This is a horrible hire, maybe the worst since Syracuse hired Robinson, and that was BAD!!

this is the worst thing the program could do. Collage football is a game or recruiting, aside from schools steeped in tradition, the only programs succeeding are those young, energetic coaches abel to go out and really speak to and understand their recruits. Bill Stewart is the exact opposite of this. Let alone he is a bad coach, unable of even motivating the amazing talent that he has inherited. This contract extension was done for one reason, because he can be paid very little money to do the job. WVU will be lucky to be in the top 25 at all while Stewart is there...this is the beginning of a long downhill slide for t he program...

As a Pitt fan and alumni, I think it was a great idea. As a regular fan, I'd have to say "WHAAAATTT?" What the hell are they thinking?

The defense is just horrible this year. The play calling is still very much like RR did (have White run around too much). They can't stop anyone right now though and that is the major problem. I don't think they have an adequate receiver corps to just open up and throw. But man, you have 3 good RB's, use them.
And Do Work Son, this is the first time I have seen you in a long time. You ran your stupid mouth off last year about the Big Least and how WVU couldn't compete with teams in the Big 12, especially Oklahoma. The last time I saw **** and WVU together, Devine and White were leaving them in the dust. So I suggest that you not talk that much smack just yet. The last time you did your team got their butts kicked....k.....thanks. :)

WAKE UP!! This isn't an extension...it's the original agreement he had yet to sign when he accepted the job with a handshake immediately following the Fiesta Bowl victory. And do you really think WVU won't make a move within the 6 years if things don't pan out?!?!
