Around the league, the consensus is that the Maple Leafs wildly overpaid for free agent defenseman Jeff Finger, who'll earn a guaranteed $14 million over the next four years, following career totals of 94 games and 24 points. One GM said, "He was on our radar, too, for something like $750,000 a year."

Must admit...that signing was a real head scratcher.

This deal is what makes me laugh a people saying Shanny should take the league minimum.

Jeff Finger = 3.5 mil for 8 goals and 11 assists (72 games)
Brendan Shanahan = 750k for 23 goals and 23 assists (73 games)

I guess either...
A) the Leafs continue their tradition of stupid management decisions
or
B) that one game Finger would have made 15 goals and 12 assists

THE LEAFS SUCK BIG BALLS. who does he think he is? michael Ryder?lolollolololololololo. My GM deserves a tase in the forehead for being so desperate. Ryder? Geez. This basterd better score. My GM sucks big time. Desperate fu--cker.

BGM, Finger's signing makes the one of Ryder look prudent. Now that I looked, Ryder's stats ain't half bad.

Yeah, this was a brilliant move. This won't be the first time this season the Leafs get the Finger.

Lol... overpaid?

This just in: the sky is blue.

I've never seen him play. Does he have the potential to be worth this money before his contract is up? This seems like a bad signing now but could it end up being a deal in the end.

Hilariously bad signing. Go Laffs go!

I think Fletcher was pressured into signing someone.....anyone.
So instead of giving everyone else the finger, he took it.

September 14, 2008  07:23 PM ET

... and it took them 2 months to realize that!

The one and only worse deal signed this summer was the $39 million deal the Rangers gave to Redden.

The single stupidest signing they have done this year. Even if Sundin comes back in a wheelchair and is paid to do nothing, the Finger contract makes me sick. Who is this finger guy? Talk about right place at right time.

September 15, 2008  10:50 AM ET

Yeah, and they gave him a free copy of Slapshot, too.

September 15, 2008  02:03 PM ET

well duh!

They thought they were getting Paul Coffee there.
