Did Pirates trade to save money?
Although Pirates management is hesitant to use the word, it's obvious by the trading in July of Jason Bay and Xavier Nady they are in a full-bore rebuilding mode. That's a reasonable, although not clear-cut, course considering where the team was at the time of the trades and it's chances of getting significantly better in the future. But here's a question about that rebuilding: Is it being done to put a better product on the field in the future or is it being done, in a familiar refrain for the franchise, to lower the payroll. President Frank Coonelly and general manager Neil Huntington likely would react with indignation to the suggestion their motives weren't strictly to improve the team. But their actions speak for themselves.

Is it really considered "rebuilding" if you never really had anything built in the first place?

Lowering payroll isn't a sin. I look at the Rays, Marlins and Twins and long ago realized that my team is lacking in scouting, coaching, general management and ownership.

It's guaranteeing profits. That's the bottom line for NUTting. Winning is not part of the equation for current ownership.

MATTUSA, I recognize that....and, were it 1993, and this were happening, than the "rebuilding" tag would apply.....however, when you go from the top to the bottom, and then repeatedly dismantle a bottom-dwellar, that's not another round of "rebuilding"....It's just continuing to be terrible.
