Flames hope Nilson goes to Russia

As the Predators awaited resolution over Alexander Radulov's bolt to join Russia's Kontinental Hockey League, word came last week that Marcus Nilson, under contract with the Flames for 2008-09 at $1 million, is attempting to hook on with the vaunted Red Army squad. By the sound of things, the Flames won't object, since the 30-year-old Nilson really doesn't factor into their plans. If he heads to Russia, then the Flames wouldn't be on the hook for his $1 million against the cap. Coach Mike Keenan made Nilson a healthy scratch 24 times in 2007-08 and then dressed him for only two of seven playoff games vs. the Sharks. Ah, but the Flames have said nothing publicly. Why? A bit of a greasy spot here, because the NHL is arguing that Radulov has a binding deal to play with the Predators and believes the KHL must honor the player's commitment to Nashville. Well, Nilson has a binding deal to play with Calgary, but it's OK for him to go the route that the league wants to deny Radulov? Hello to the goose and the gander.

Is it just me or does Keenan look like another type of head?

The difference between Nilson and Radulov is that Radulov is good.

Whether it's a first liner or a fourth liner he's still under contract. If they want rid of him buy him out take the smaller cap hit then the full amount.

"A bit of a greasy spot here"

I didn't know Bettman was mentioned in the article.

Keenan made him a healthy scratch 24 times? Sounds like the usual Mike Keenan cold shoulder that has hit so many others over the years.

The guy has no future in Calgary anyway, as long as Keenan is there.

I wish Mike Keenan went to Russia .... and .... I wish he took all the Sutters drawing a paycheck from the Flames organization with him as well!

I think that's L. Ron Hubbard come back from the dead. Except he was never really dead. Just frozen until the time was ripe for the Scientologists to take control of the League. Thawed him out like a Swanson's dinner. Where's Ike when we need him?

Actually, from what I've heard, the Scientologists are big into stem cell operations. They have used several hosts to try to cultivate a new L. Ron. It figures to turn out like the mutant leader in Total Recall...except he is morphing off of Keenan's head. How's THAT for science fiction!?

Of course Keenan doesn't want him on the team, he has some offensive talent and know's how to put 3 or 4 words together in a sentence...it's broken english but it's still a sentence. He's hoping to take that Million dollars and sign a couple more meat-heads to play on his 2nd and 3rd lines. Iggy and Cammilari are going to have their work cut out for them this year because their talent pool is about as deep as a kiddies pool.

Nilson Who ?

September 15, 2008  09:08 PM ET

Mike Keenan please go to russia instead.........Since you fit in to their style of how to play the game. Uck what a bad coach or been involed with. Everything he touched inthe NHL has mostly failed. Leaving a mess of a team each time he is fired..........

I hope Bettman goes to Russia......

Does he have Keenan's brain? If they're cloning now that might not be such a good thing......the test prototype was originally Tortorella but they couldn't go with that because too many people were getting fingers poked in their chests.

OMG that is indeed scary! Keenan is scary the way he kills a team from the farm teams to the front office.
