Michigan LB transfers to Rutgers
Former Holy Spirit High School star Marcus Witherspoon, one of the state's top-rated players last year, has transferred to Rutgers from Michigan and will be attending classes beginning Monday, the Press of Atlantic City reported in its Saturday editions. The 6-2, 225-pound freshman linebacker will be eligible to play immediately, according to the report. Witherspoon originally failed to be declared eligible by the NCAA Clearinghouse and was sent home from Michigan in August. He then took a required course to regain his eligibility. But first-year Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said last week that Witherspoon was ineligible and would never play at Michigan as a result. According to the Press report, ex-Holy Spirit coach Bill Walsh said Friday the NCAA then investigated the issue and found Witherspoon eligible to play. Witherspoon told the paper he still isn't sure what happened at Michigan.

Just goes to show that RichRod still does not have a clue as to how to handle players and does not really care about any of them. How many players have left UM since RR came there? Bunches and bunches more to come.

I will always debate to the end with anyone that coach RR is one of the best football engineer's. His system will work and people will be afraid of it once he gets the players to run it. Everyone better pile on Michigan while they can during the next 2 years, because they will be really good for a long time after UM molds to RR.
With that said I will also debate to the end with anyone that RR is a terrible coach. his inability to adapt to Pitt's defense in the biggest game of his life. The fact that the backup RB had more carries that Devine & Slaton combined. The way he talks to his players. The way he personally degrades them when he is angry. When I used to play football my favorite coaches were the one's who got in your face when you did something wrong, or to get you fired up. I feel RR takes it past football to a personally degrading level... and that is driving players away from his program.
Anyway, if this kid was a top talent... he would be at UM. They prolly didn't want him, or they would of found a way to get him in.

I think it is laughable that you Big Blue fans take it as a given that RicheyRod will be successful in a couple years. He won't have UConn, Cincinnati, USF, Rutgers. etc to beat up on in the Big Ten. He wasn't so successful in the Big East when Va Tech, B.C. and Miami were in the league. I frankly think RR will bomb at UM.

The kid is an incoming freshman which means he is a RicheyRod recruit. Why get rid of him? The article says he was a top recruit in Michigan. Does RR really want to alienate hometown Michigan kids by this type of treatment. The High School coaches in MI will not like this.
As far as RR's "system" is concerned, I see it different. He recruited smaller, but fast players (not 5-star) at WVa and it worked against the level of players he faced in the "new" Big East. I don't think it will work in the Big Ten....we'll see

The article says he was a top recruit, but not in the state of Michigan. Read more closely....
The high school that Marcus Witherspoon went to is in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

being a USC fan since I was in grade school and attedned USC for vollege, I have watched the PAC 10 and Big 10 for a long time and it is really weird to see Michigan going through this; hopefully it work out much better than Larry Smith & Paul Hackett did at USC.

The only thing that RR has do to MICHIGAN is to destory MICHIGAN football. Frist he comes in and spits on MICHIGAN football trditions and then he runs off a very good young QB for two jokes that have no clue what to do. Lets see he's ran off a very good lineman and now a linebacker that is a top player. Even now new players are refuseing to come to MICHIGAN because of RR. What will this sob do next remove the WING from the helmets I would not put it past him.

You are correct (waiting for success), I mis-read the story. It still must be his recuit. Thunderdragon, I feel your pain. We went through some of the same things when John Cooper took over as HC. Unlike RR, Cooper was a good recruiter which helped keep things from going too far down. Cooper's first season, he was 4-6-1,
and only went 2-10-1 versus UM. The good news is that when you hire your next coach, he'll bring back the traditions....people will love him!

For those of us who bleed Maize 'n' Blue, it will be a hard but necessary year. Lloyd Carr was the last of an era long gone and adjusting to the new speed of college football has taken the Big 10, and Michigan in particular, too long to catch on. If you think we lost anything in Mallet going to Arkansas, you yearn for continued mediocrity (meaning 8-4 seasons and yearly losses to OSU). For those of us who attended church at the Big House every Saturday, the house cleaning was LONG overdue.
If you don't think Big Blue is going to steam roll through the B10 two years from now, you either ignorant, overly nostalgic, or both. Many disagreed that Anthony Carter wasn't "Michigan Football", that we shouldn't throw as much as Jim Harbaugh did, or Charles Woodson shouldn't be allowed to be play both defense and offense. On Saturday, I saw a team without one sr. starting on offense, fumble the ball 7 times, have 6 turnovers, and still have a chance to win until the final Notre Dame TD. Take the development the offense has made in THREE GAMES and apply it to 2 seasons. McGuffie is going to be Heisman contender his Jr. year, well have a second year spread QB, and all you people whining about tradition will be on the RR bandwagon saying you knew it all along.
Big Blue will be lucky to go 6 - 6, but if they do, they'll win their bowl game vs. a 2nd tier MAC or WAC school, finish 2nd or 3rd in the Big 10 next year and be in the national championship hunt by 2010 and for MANY YEARS TO COME!!! And Mr. Pryor is going to have his final game as a Buckeye (probably his Jr. year as he'll bolt to the NFL at the drop of a draft pick) spoiled. Sometimes you need to make short term sacrifices for long term gains, and if a 6 - 6 season is what Big Blue needed to do to get back in the national title hunt, that is a sacrifice all those who bleed maize 'n' blue should be willing to do. You don't have the most wins in college football without embracing innovation and long term thinking.
