Play-calling frustrates Miami players

Though none will say it for attribution, some UM players expressed frustration with the conservative play-calling against UF and said offensive coordinator Patrick Nix must trust them to take chances downfield. The young receivers need work on separating from defensive backs, but one UM receiver strongly disputed Randy Shannon's claim that ''nobody got open'' against Florida. . . . Several UM players are perplexed about why receiver Jermaine McKenzie, who's great in practice, isn't getting playing time. McKenzie, whose ankle had healed before the UF game, didn't play and drove himself there.

The coaching staff doesn't feel there team has the talent to pull off some basic plays. Way to show the players you believe in them.

Why in the hell would a player have to drive himself to a game? The coach really needs to answer that question, especially if the kid is that good!

September 14, 2008  10:33 AM ET

Yeah, I am a little confused as to why a player had to drive himself there.

September 14, 2008  11:20 AM ET

Making a player drive to a game himself isn't even something you do for disiplinary action. I think this program needs new coaches to turn it in the right direction. They've too quickly dropped out of prominence.

"I think this program needs new coaches to turn it in the right direction. They've too quickly dropped out of prominence. "

Um these are new coaches and the defensive coach (Bill Young) is in his first year with Miami. They dropped out of prominence during the Coker era. Since Shannon took over he has highly touted recruits coming in and he is starting to turn the program back in the right direction. I agree with the article. It is not all the coaches. It is Nix. Most are going to give him this year before they start calling for his head.

First of all, i would like to know why Jermaine McKenzie had to drive himself there? What in the heck is that all about?

Now, on to Piece of trash Nix. This guy is EASILY the WORST offensive coordinator i have EVER seen in my life, this guy frustrates me to no end. He plays the most pee-wee style football i have ever seen in my life. They run a million screens per game, not once has he faked the screen and bombed it to someone running a streak. Correction, not once has he ever taken a shot down the field!!!!!!! nothing but 5 yard slants and the shotgun run to the right. My blood pressure is through the roof even thinking about it so ill stop. FIRE THIS GUY, HE SUCKS!!!!! Patrick Nix is the only obstacle the canes have to returning back to their Championship form.. ugh.. He gave us absolutely NO chance at winning the UF game, and its really a depressing thought having this guy ruin everything we have going for us.

Wheres all the fans that were calling for Cokers head on a platter, they need to be targeting this worthless coordinator we have.

just sayin..

Is this the University of Miami or the Oakland Raiders? It all sounds the same.

As a Georgia Tech fan, I am obligated to say to the Miami fans - We told you so.

September 14, 2008  04:39 PM ET

Are you still living in the 80s? Or perhaps you are thinking of the semenholes or geytors

September 14, 2008  04:47 PM ET

Damn play-calling...........

September 14, 2008  06:40 PM ET

That would be great if he "borrowed" the coaches car for the trip, and brought it back with the tank empty!

The player chose to drive himself to the game. He wasn't on the travel roster because of the injury but went to the game anyway. I have been talking with friends since the night of the game about why UM won't throw the ball down field. They may not trust the young WR's but you'll never know if they can do it if you don't give them a chance. I so let the ball fly and let all that athleticism and speed become a factor. You better bet FSU will do it and the guys will make some plays. A college football game can be determined by 3 or 4 big plays and UM has the ability to get them. You neve know when a DB migh slip and fall or you may even get some pass interference calls. Dammit Shannon/Nix, let the guys play like they've been playing all their lives, up and down the field.

Lane Kiffin may be available soon; you want a young OC that will open the offense, give him a call.

I would have to agree with that. He probably figured if he wasn't going to play, he might as well let someone that doesn't usually get to travel with the team take his spot. He still wanted to be there for his teammates, so he drove himself.

The OC obviously has an issue with perfectionism. Nobody who has ever won at a highly competitive level will tell you they made a plan and executed in order to win. If you don't take risks you will never be surprised by the outcome.
