Could Blue Jays land Manny?

Just wondering: Could the Blue Jays combine the money originally intended for Frank Thomas, add it to A.J. Burnett's salary, and combine it to go after Manny Ramirez in free agency? If this pseudo-playoff run is this much fun, imagine how much better it would be with Manny batting fourth for the Jays

OR sayin Fenway Faithful or Theo Epstein

I'm not an expert in International Law, but I think it might violate several treaties sending Manny to Canada! Seriously, other than Celine Dion and Loverboy, what has Canada done to deserve this?

September 14, 2008  12:10 PM ET

Once my favorite player, I don't care where Manny goes.

September 14, 2008  12:47 PM ET

This idea is so crazy, it just might work...

Wouldn't the cold weather aggravate manny's bad knees, as it did in Boston when he couldn't get a new contract? Manny could get a fresh start, though. He could start all over taking time off for the Grandmother who died six or seven times when he was in Boston.

Well, the Jays aren't exactly the Pirates or Royals. They do keep a very good player or two on their roster. This article, although I'm sure it was conjured up to fill a space that Simmons is paid to fill, does put together a few loose ends nicely; the money and their current level of competitiveness, most importantly. Getting Manny with money the do have available would help them out tremendously, obviously with their division rivals in mind. They'd have a home-run hitting machine who will enjoy hitting them most against the Red Sox and Yankees. Totally invaluable. But will Manny play in Canada? Who knows, the guy's a lunatic. Wouldn't shock me.

The Sun is one of the worst rags up here folks.....all crapola.

September 14, 2008  02:26 PM ET

Who knows? I read that growing up, he was a die-hard Jays fan because of all the Latin-American players that they had during the 80s....but who knows....

September 14, 2008  02:45 PM ET

I'm hoping he stays in LA. It remains to be seen if McCourt will spend the money. He's too cheap.

Canada got a pass on Loverboy though, because they gave us Rush.....

September 14, 2008  02:53 PM ET

Manny would probably get along with Cito, I bet.....

September 14, 2008  04:49 PM ET

TenRings, I'll give them that and the fact that we stole Wayne Gretzky. But they still owe us an apology for Howie Mandel.

September 14, 2008  05:10 PM ET

The Jays were Manny's favourite team growing up and he has repeatedly said he would love to play for them.

September 14, 2008  09:29 PM ET

Muck Fanny and the horse he rode in on... or something like that.

September 14, 2008  11:23 PM ET

Neil Young. Guess Who.

Not bad, eh?

.... and Pam Anderson.

September 14, 2008  11:59 PM ET

Why would anyone pay a guy who continually quits on his teamates???

September 15, 2008  12:50 AM ET

He deserses to play for the Pirates/Royals/Reds/Mariners or Padres for the rest of his career.

Just wondering, why does everything that has the Jays involved lead to debates about my country? Oh well, at least there's no crazy US-Canada internet fights like on some of the foxsports comment boards lol. But yes Manny's favourite team was the Jays while growing up across the Harlem from Yankee Stadium, because of all the great Latin players that were playing in Toronto during that time (George Bell, Tony Fernandez, Luis Leal, Damaso Garcia). Two other things to consider: A) Don't you think he'd want to come back to the AL East and get a shot at both the Yankees AND Red Sox? And B) Manny loves hitting at SkyDome, I was at the game when he hit one above the top window of the hotel, longer than Canseco's steroid-infused blast.
