Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis likely will undergo surgery to repair the torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee on Tuesday, which will allow him to spend time with recruits and be involved with planning for the game Saturday against Michigan State before checking himself into the hospital. Weis said that while he could coach from the press box, he would prefer to remain on the field.

After a decent win against Michigan, he should be able to continue his recruiting success. It really seems like he is getting along better with his players this year, something he said he was going to try and be better at after being somewhat distant in the past.

Michigan turning over the ball 6 times isn't going to win games. ND played better than last week against SDSU but Michigan beat themselves. McGuffie had a break out game.

If you want to see Charlie Weis' injury as it happened, watch this

It may have been gift wrapped, but a win is a win. We didn't play particularly well, especially in the second half, but 2-0 is a hellavu lot better than 0-2. I'm worried about the runinng game (or lack thereof), but the pass protection is a lot better than it was last year.

September 14, 2008  11:49 AM ET

Gotcha B real. We still haven't played a good game until our RBs run the ball well. 8 more games till SC.

September 14, 2008  12:26 PM ET

That was a nasty hit, Erin Andrews will make it all better.

September 14, 2008  12:38 PM ET

Clausen is good, the running backs are good, but the biggest problem is the blocking on running plays-needs to be more consistent.
I'm waiting to hear all of the excuses from Michigan fans about about how they gave the game away, etc. "To hell with Michigan!"

Charlie is a TOUGH guy! I think it will rub off on the players. it was a cheap shot from the michigan player, at the very least it was a block in the back.

ND has grown up from last season. I can't say they should win 8 or 9 games because we never know who's going to show up. Is it going to be the 2007 team, or the team from the 4th quarter of the SDST game, or the team that did everthing they had to do to win against michigan.

Keep it going Irish, BEAT MSU!!

so far so good for us...but we have a long road ahead...OSU lost their shot at SC...maybe we'll get a miracle...hey a guy can dream...8 more games till SC...

September 14, 2008  01:53 PM ET

WWWOOOOWWW! That game was like a nice big burp. Satisfying but not the end of it. (I know, I said that before)

September 14, 2008  02:20 PM ET

ND is better than last year, that much seems clear. Their schedule lends itself to a solid season if they can improve throughout the year. I wouldn't be too anxious for that USC game to arrive though. That one's gonna hurt...badly.

I love to throw dirt on Notre Lame more than most, but I do think that Weiss shows class with his public statements. His comment after being injured and needing surgery "I feel like an athlete, for the first time in my life"

I can't help but like the guy.

September 14, 2008  02:40 PM ET

Dude tears his ACL and MCL without screaming bloody murder, he turns down painkillers, and spend the rest of the game coaching while on crutches in a downpour. Hell of a guy.

That was the best front seven ND will face until SC. They just passed a HUGE early test. Just re-watched the game this morning. They made the majority of their 2nd or 3rd and 1 attempts, something they couldn't do last year. They also played with serious emotion, another thing lacking from last year. All while hosting some of the top recruits in the country. Good stuff.

There are holes, no doubt, but as Weis said, the needle's pointing up.

September 14, 2008  03:02 PM ET

Nasty injury to the big guy. I give him my respect for sticking it out on the sidelines. ND seems to be improving, but they haven't played a team even considered good yet. Didn't get to watch much of the game...but big win for ND.

September 14, 2008  04:38 PM ET

The Irish do have a ways to go, beating an unranked team doesn't get you into the Top 25. I think that most of the realistic ND fans know that we are still a year or two away, especially with the recruits coming on board. The team has gotten bigger, but more importantly they have gotten quicker. That said, I still don't want to play USC, unless Pete would finally come to South Bend in the fall sometime!

September 14, 2008  04:48 PM ET

Coach from the press box?

September 14, 2008  05:25 PM ET

What I think is the truth of the matter is that Charlie first, full recruit class is this year junior class and it is not bad. Before making any predictions, I would like to see the team playing in East Lansing next week. That game may show better what is this team made of and what could be real possibilities. USC game is a game every one is looking forward to but I do not believe USC is as good as the pollsters wanted to be, they have not played any team worthed of respect as I easily see how Ohio State was overrated, even since they played Ohio...

*******
SC does come to South Bend in the fall. We are there every other October. The terms of the series are that NL comes to LA in late November and we go to NL in October. This way, the game will be decided by the athletes and not the weather.

And of course you don't want to play SC...it would be easier to cruise through the season without playing a top ranked opponent, but its only fair...y'all have to take your lumps. We did it for 13 years a while back when we couldn't beat NL. But play them we did for thirteen long years

September 14, 2008  06:39 PM ET

I'm talking November man, November. Pete does not want to play in the cold and the snow, never has.

September 14, 2008  06:59 PM ET

Winning cures alot things, even insults! Glad to see the true ND fans talking it up.

I think we might need to bring out the Catholics vs. Convicts t-shirts again. Just change Miami to USC. Those were the days!
