Team sources: Davis to fire Kiffin

In a conversation about Raiders coach Lane Kiffin in mid-August, Raiders managing general partner Al Davis said, "He's not the guy I hired." From the outset of training camp, Kiffin has fired back almost on a daily basis by reminding everyone that he lacks the autonomy to do the job he was hired to do. The endgame is coming soon, according to several front office people who have witnessed the war of wills unfold between the 79-year-old Davis and 33-year-old Kiffin over the past nine months or so. Those people, who spoke on condition of anonymity, say Davis is at wit's end and prepared to fire Kiffin before season's end, perhaps as soon as Monday, regardless of the outcome of today's game against the Kansas City Chiefs. He has been contemplating a course of action for many weeks.

Kiffin will need police protection to get his **** outta town.

Why would anyone want to work for Al Davis? Since he lacks the ability to hire a coach he likes, Al should just coach and get it over with!

September 14, 2008  11:02 AM ET

No one can win with Davis trying to run things. He gets in the way and obviously has no business even owning a team much less trying to tell a coach how to run one.

Whatever Mr. Davis decides to do I hope it comes soon. I believe the uncertainty has negatively effected the team which is a much better collection of talent than what was exhibited last Monday. Personally I like Kiffin and believes he has the skills to be an NFL Head Coach but this is Davis' team and the coach serves at his pleasure. It was pretty obvious that James Lofton will be given the Interim position if Davis makes a move during the season and hopefully the former Los Angeles Sportsman's Park multiple sport All-Star will reestablish the Pride & Poise of the Silver and Black.

Al can't coach. Al knows dick about the game. Look at his off season contracts they offered players. He gave Javon Walker, a broken down receiver an insane amount of $. MeAngelo received another huge contract. Maybe Hall gets performance bonuses based on the # of stupid personal fouls he gets called for. Thats not even counting the insane money he's spent on linemen who can't play worth a damn.

September 14, 2008  11:13 AM ET

The problem is Davis - not the coach. Davis is senile and the game has passed him bye. . . . .

September 14, 2008  11:22 AM ET

Davis needs to fire himself! What self respecting coach would want to work for this senile, egomaniacal whacko? Take the fast "Lane" and get out now while you still have a career.

September 14, 2008  11:26 AM ET

What Davis really needs to do is to stop wearing those satin white outfits!

Jim Fassel is read to kiss Al's black hole

September 14, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Davis will be doing Kiffin a favor. Kiffin will be the next Shanahan and make Davis regret it for the way he was treated by him. Davis has no class and the Raiders will return to the SB when he sells the team.

I wonder if the commissioner will interven on Kiffin's behalf. Why not? He intervened with the Favre-Packer saga. Heck, the commish should force Davis to sell the team for being such an incompetent owner over the last 15 years.

September 14, 2008  11:38 AM ET

wow! hide women and children davis is coming with the firing squad

September 14, 2008  11:39 AM ET

Davis has been trying to initimidate and humiliate Kiffin into quitting becuase he doesn't want to pay his contract buyout. Kiffin has called Davis' bluff.

Davis is all about power and ego, he has made the Raiders into laughing stock. He's actually not the owner, as he likes to let people believe, but the managing partner (as the article correctly points out). Clearly, the other partners in the franchise don't give a rat's behind about the team, and are happy yo let Davis have his little toy train.

September 14, 2008  11:49 AM ET

fifolo, good point. Didn't Al try the same thing with Art Shell? Trying to get him to quit and not pay the contract?

September 14, 2008  11:53 AM ET

Al Davis, is an old senile nut case! How can a team that won 3 SB's fall off the map like this? Get a GM, and sit in the owner's box! We went thru the same thing in Dallas, and if not for Parcells, we would be in the same shape, let the coaches coach!!! Reminds me of John McCain, old & stubborn!!!

al davis needs to fire al davis

September 14, 2008  12:13 PM ET

Granted Al does seem to be erratic and suspect as a FO man; however they do well with the financial numbers. According to Forbes in 2007 the Oakland Raiders had revenue of 189M and
operating income of 46.2M, 24.4% which is very high. The only team with a higher operating income was Washington with 66M on revnue of 312M, 21.1%
Limited partners will not be unhappy with the Raiders financial numbers; the football numbers are an entirely different story. Typically limited partners are interested in ROI not divisional standings.

September 14, 2008  12:23 PM ET

The Raiders are a joke, I'm sure Kiffin is praying to get fired.

September 14, 2008  12:55 PM ET

I predict that Al Davis fires Kiffin, moves the team to Lompoc California.

September 14, 2008  12:56 PM ET

When I saw Al Davis on TV the other night, all I could thimk about was the movie "Weekend at Bernies'"

September 14, 2008  01:11 PM ET

Shannon Sharpe said it best on CBS's pre game show. Until there's an ownership change in Oakland (i.e.-Davis steps down or sells out), nothing will change for the better.
