Why Girardi benched Cano

It may be too little, too late, but Joe Girardi finally took a stand with Robinson Cano. Cano's lapses in attention and effort have been more evident this year, so much so, the second baseman was yanked from a game for the first time yesterday. Girardi wouldn't promise that Cano would be back in the lineup tonight. "That's embarrassing, to be taken out of the game," Cano said after the Yankees beat the Rays, 8-4, at the Stadium. "Ninety-nine percent of the time, I play hard." The play that forced Girardi's hand came in the fourth inning, when Cliff Floyd's grounder bounced off of a diving Jason Giambi's glove. The ball bounded past Cano, who just stood there, looking at it. Xavier Nady had to race in from right field to field the ball. Cano's lack of effort allowed Floyd - who is a lot of things, but not speedy - to get to second base. "I thought Nady was closer," Cano said. That reasoning wasn't good enough for Girardi, who had previously stood up for his beleaguered second baseman. "I wasn't happy with the effort on that ground ball, so I took him out," said Girardi.

Ah how the mighty have fallen. Is this not a micro-cosum of their season this year? Maybe they will resign Pavano for another 4 years?

I'm glad Joe FINALLY did something about Cano. His laziness is becoming painful to watch

I don't like seeing this happen to the Yankees.

Wait a minute........................

Yes I do!!!!!!

September 15, 2008  07:47 AM ET

Robbie, you say 99 percent of the time you play hard but the one percent sticks out like a sore thumb....

September 15, 2008  08:32 AM ET

Robinson's got Mannyitits...I hear it is contageous...most likely spread via Damon....

I never liked that pink-headed freak.

I think that's just super duper that Girardi pulled Cano ... yet another meaningless thing that should have happened while the Yankees were still in contention. It reminds me a lot of my reaction to A-Rod's grand salami last night: "That's great! But so what?"

I hope this guy is embarrassed! He should be ...

As a Red Sox fan, I hope he keeps up the bad work, however. ;)

Just being honest.

Honesty is the best policy, Catwoman. Regarding the boys: Now now boys, calm down. Next thing you'll be telling me is that Jeter sucks. But seriously folks, Cano being benched is one thing, and Girardi is still on his learning curve, but wait until the off season, cano trade bait for pitching? Hmmm haven't we said this last month? yes I think so, FN alittle late.........Start spreading the news, la la la...I'm leaving today...la la la....

he should have been sent down to the minors when Melky was, they could have done their DUMB AND DUMBER act down there.. Ransom is a great fill in and i hope that we see more of him..

I truelly believe that the ONE OF THE ONLY REASONS Joe benched Canot was because they where playing TB where Upton has been benched many times because of his play and Maddon had many remarks to the newspaper..

September 15, 2008  09:16 AM ET

I really wish more managers would take a stand like this, just not at the end of the season, but throughout as well. Too many players are showing laziness or just plain disrespect for the job by not running out plays or displaying a lack of interest.

Morning Tony. Cano's problem is that he hangs out with Cyder too much. But seriously now, another very talented hitter at second base traded? How many shots do we get at putting a permanent 2B on the roster? I think I might hang in there with him next year and see how he performs. It's not like he's Melky.

I like your view, NY25to13, and your comment on the issue is OK too.

Hi Atro, I said trade bait. One can not refuse an offer made that can not be refused. This year cano had trouble at the plate, no patience and had mind cramps in the field. We all know he was an under achiever at .260 with 13 HR, not a good year. for his power standards and career average standards, what 40 points below? He will work on his hitting in the off season, but also needs to work on his attitude. That's way Jeter call him canoe. Hey does this picture remind you of an avitar we know of?
