LJ: Chiefs are phasing me out

After sharing the backfield workload for the second straight week, Larry Johnson couldn't contain his frustration any longer. Johnson said after the Chiefs' 23-8 loss to Oakland at Arrowhead Stadium that he was obviously being phased out of the offense. Johnson had the second-lowest rushing total during his time as the Chiefs' featured back, with 22 yards in 12 carries. "I've got to sit back and figure that the writing is on the wall, that this season or next season could be my last season as a Chief," Johnson said. "I don't know. But obviously if they're making personnel changes now and I'm not even in for any of the snaps to (try to) help win this game, then that pretty much says it all. "I'm not dumb. I know what's going on. I sense what's going on. Nobody should run the ball if it isn't me. I always felt that way. If I'm not getting the ball, then I should be tired. If I'm not tired and I'm not getting the ball, then there's something going on. I've just got to deal with it." Specifically, Johnson said he was most upset at being removed from the game when the Chiefs were near the opponent's end zone. He was in for only one of the final four plays in last week's game in New England and was replaced by either Jamaal Charles or Kolby Smith on the Chiefs' only touchdown drive on Sunday.

Stop crying. It was one game.

I'd have to agree with Johnson's take on his situation. I saw his body language as he was taken out of the game and it was obvious that he was frustrated. The play calling was definitely questionable when Johnson got the ball. All of his rushes were through the "A-Gap" where the Chiefs could get no movement. I think his longest rush was four yards. Being booed by the 50,000 (the venue has a capacity of nearly 80,000) at Arrowhead didn't help things either.

KC is done. There is no sign of life. Larry Johnson needs to open up his mouth and ask for a trade because even though KC might not be phasing him out, the way KC is playing makes it look like everybody is being phased out. The team is on the decline and even if he gets more touches that does not mean KC would still be able to rise from the graves.

I just cannot get up much sympathy for a guy making 5.6 million this year. He may be right, but does it rally matter on that team. They are doing him a favor as far as wearing him down.

September 15, 2008  08:45 AM ET

Larry, if you produced maybe you would get your paws on the ball. I am a die hard Chiefs fan and it happens averytime...the airgame is so pathetic that of course the defense is going to key on your running game. If you as the back can't compensate then maybe it is time to find someone else. Since his ONE season he has been a pain in the arse...Let Colby learn the system since LJ feels he is above giving 100%

September 15, 2008  08:48 AM ET

The Chiefs need to revamp their offensive line before they're going to get production from any of their backs. I can't even name an offensive lineman or a receiver for this team.

September 15, 2008  08:48 AM ET

Did LJ even think that its because he sucks IS WHY hes not in the game ???? and when your getting beat by one of the worst teams in the NFL , AKA ....Oakland, Why would you run the ball anyway ???? DO US ALL A FAVOR AND RETIRE !!!!!

September 15, 2008  08:59 AM ET

Hey man dont sweat it come on over to the saints. We love duece but we need a back who can pick up those yards and reggie is not the one....

September 15, 2008  09:35 AM ET

There are a lot of causes and effects to why the Chiefs are in the state that they are in. The offense has never been the same since Al Saunders has left. Carl Peterson lost grip of the team and no longer knows how to have a balanced team of rookies and veterans. During the off season there was plenty of opportunities to bring in a veteran quarterback who could have helped us pull a few wins this season as well as build confidence in our offensive young guys for next season. And finally as far as Larry Johnson, he will never be as good as he was if we dont build a team around him. You are only as good as the pieces around you. When those pieces are weak your main offensive threats will crumble.

I agree - he is WAY over paid considering how bad their team is, they need to be spending that $$ in other areas as well - like @ QB

12 carries for 22 years says alot buddy

September 15, 2008  11:07 AM ET

I wish my bosses would way over pay me and then not ask me to do very much....oh wait, they are.....hehehe

September 15, 2008  11:11 AM ET

LJ seems to have lost his vision for finding daylight. Oh, wait, our o-line isn't providing any. Way to go Herm and Carl. Another wasted off-season. Jesus.

Overpayment? Really? Paying for LJ was the last thing CP will do before he retires. I'm sorry that you feel little production with 9 in the box is LJ's fault. Try doing your "overpayed" job with inferior equipment and see how long things last.
When the Will Brothers retired, and they decided that a retarded Green was worse than Huard or Croyle.....well, that was the short step off of a long cliff.

September 15, 2008  11:16 AM ET

Sorry, last GOOD thing CP will do before he retires

September 15, 2008  11:21 AM ET

The reason why LJ can't produce is because he suffers from BS disease. No, not that BS, but Barry Sanders disease. This is the same crap that the Fords did for years, crappy O-line, bad QB, miserable defense, except that Barry could fake out 7 guys for a 5 yard gain. Not even the Fords could have asked for a better weapon than that. LJ ain't that guy......but who ever will be again.
Only the great Barry would make production from this garbage called an O-line because that's what Barry did for 9 years. That's a tall order to fill. Carrying a team (though LJ is only in year 2 of that role) gets exhausting. For a power back, that's almost impossible.

September 15, 2008  11:22 AM ET

said it once and ill say it again, the Offensive line makes teams great.. thats why NE can put in Matt cassel and still perform well against the jets.. the chiefs have not replaced the production of willie roaf and will shields, you see why the chiefs stinked last year and stink this year. you can have a top notch running back with bad linemen and they still will perform badly.. and sorry but ROFL for the people who put LJ on their fantasy draft.. that was dumb.

September 15, 2008  11:27 AM ET

One more note: Thigpen? And not even Yancy!!!! Gee, wonder how many blitz/9 in the box packages we'll see with Thigpen under center. For all of those who drafted LJ (myself included), kiss that #13/$30 pick goodbye.
