Why Brewers held Sabathia back

Going for broke in their four-game series to catch the Milwaukee Brewers for the National League wild-card lead, the Philadelphia Phillies pitched two starters on short rest. Despite that, Brewers manager Ned Yost said at the start of the day Sunday that he never considered pitching ace CC Sabathia on short rest to try to stave off the charging Phillies. "(The Phillies) had to (use starters on short rest) because of the circumstances. They didn't want to. Circumstances warranted they had to do that." Yost referred to the fact that Philadelphia was four games behind at the start of the series. But with veteran Jamie Moyer and right-hander Brett Myers winning games at the start and end of the series on short rest, the Phillies swept the four games to pull even in the wild-card race.

Probably a smart move, as they look strong for a wildcard birth, plus there's no book on Sabathia with short-rest

Thanks Ned! We came into the series having dropped two tough ones to the Marlins, you had a chance to close the lid on the coffin, and you hand us 4 in a row to bring us into a tie for the wildcard....Oh, and you drop out of your own division race in the process. So CC will only get three starts in the last two weeks, unless you squeeze the schedule next week and get him a 4th start on the last day of the season, leaving him on the shelf for games 1 and 2 if you do make the playoffs.
Man, I thought OUR Manager was a knucklehead!

Looks like the Brewcrew is "starting to fade?" They've lost 11 of their last 14, with 10 of those being home games! That is a serious fade. They pretty much had the wildcard spot locked up. All they needed to do was play .500 ball. If they had done that, they would have a 4 game lead over the Phillies and 6 over the Astros.

The Brewers are choking massively. And if they choke and miss the playoffs, then the Sabathia deal could work out to be a bad trade, should Matt LaPorta fulfill his potential. For they end up trading 4 players, including 1 great and 1 good prospect and get little out of the deal - for they could just as easily have not made the playoffs without Sabathia.

I think this cost Yost his job........right or wrong. Most pitchers today don't do well on short rest....I think holding him out for the Cub Series was probably the right decision.......
