Stars' playoff run rejuvenates Modano

Mike Modano got to Brenden Morrow first in that crazy four-overtime playoff game against San Jose. The soon-to-be-38-year-old was jumping up and down like an adolescent. He was screaming "Yeah!" or something like it, as the Dallas Stars advanced to the Western Conference Finals. If you saw it in person that day in May -- or later on YouTube -- you saw a guy reveling in the enthusiasm of the game he has given so much to all these years. You saw a player rejuvenated. It was so evident that teammates noticed it immediately. "He was the first guy who looked like an 18-year-old," center Steve Ott remembered. "The smile, the excitement on his face, it was unbelievable to see him so legitimately excited. That's where he was at (18), that's where he is at 38. It brings him back wanting more." Yes, Modano had already said he would return for another NHL season before the Stars made their longest postseason run since 2000. But, as Modano put it, "with what we were able to accomplish, it made that decision to stick around easier." He would like to go through the end of his contract, the 2009-10, season, but said he'll re-evaluate how he's feeling at the end of this one. Still, as Modano enters his 19th NHL season, he's feeling that hunger, that desire for his sport.

One good shot through the boards and hes done...always been too soft.

September 15, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Too soft, Peter? Have you ever watched a hockey game in your life?

The guy have played over 1500 games (including playoffs) over 18 years. He's known as someone who plays hard every shift and has earned respect throughout the league. Get a clue.

September 15, 2008  09:08 AM ET

Watched coached and played many...yup..too soft. Hes a great player and had a great career for sure. But he sure doesn't find the corners much anymore and hes one injury away from retirement. Not saying hes no good just that hes never been a banger. Dont forget...this is a guy who would have retired `cept he lost millions in an investment scheme. that enough of a clue for you Yoda?

I always liked Mo. He was never supposed to be a banger just a scorer. He's probably got another year in him maybe two. Peter was right about him retiring if it wasn't for being scammed.

September 15, 2008  09:33 AM ET

What? Rejuvenated? Then, how come Brendan Morrow was the only one skating, playing hard and scoring on that team during the playoffs? Oh, I get it! He got rejuvenated for the upcoming season! It's OK, he'll look old again before the end of the season! It's time for Big Mo to hang them up. He's got nothing more to prove!

I've always been a fan of Modano. The league has enough "bangers", everyone doesn't need to be that type of player. There's something to be said for skill and grace...unless of course anyone thinks a couple players named Gretzky and Lemieux were too soft and should have been more of the "banger" type of player.

Yup. That's more than a fair answer, Peter. I think the fact that you said he's 'always' been too soft was what I objected to. Sounded like you were dismissing him outright.
Now that you've clarified that he doesn't find the corners 'anymore', I hear where you are coming from. And yes...most 38 year-olds would be considered an injury away from retirement.

I'm glad he didn't retire, regardless of the circumstances. I think he would have regretted it. Roenick is a good example of a rejuvinated existance too. Modana is still a threat when he is on the ice and needs to be carefully checked and watched. That alone adds something to the line he plays on.
No, he wasn't a banger...didn't need to be. Speed and finese and smart.
There are enough players in the NHL with Bodies by Tonka and Brains by Fisher Price.

Because Modano can skate like he does his career will last longer. The guys who have to work to skate retire much ealier. Ditto for Sakic. Great skater, easy to keep playing.

What I like best about Modano is he was not a Canuck. almost but not quite. Instead they got Trvor Linden who's greatest sin was always that he was not Mike Modano. While this wasn't as great a difference as the gap between Mario Lemieux and Kirk Muller, the talent gap was huge.

Twice the Canucks have missed out on ringer #1 picks. The first time they got Dale Tallon instead of Gil Perreault.

Unfortunatly he's been hurt alot , but I still like him, beautiful skater..

That, my friend is a classic! Love it.

Any wonder as to why they signed Avery

September 15, 2008  02:18 PM ET

Pretty sure he played with a broken left wrist in the '99 Cup Finals. Not bad for a player who's "always been too soft". Love your next justification, too - you've watched and coached and played? Good for you. At that level? No, probably not? With a broken wrist? Never? Oh, geez you're even softer!

September 15, 2008  03:43 PM ET

Puleeeeeeeeze..........

September 15, 2008  04:00 PM ET

Modano may be a pretty boy with wheels who lacks a checking game and gets straight-up jacked every now and again, but he's not soft.

September 15, 2008  04:04 PM ET

"Any wonder as to why they signed Avery"

Ah, a spiteful Leafs fan. I bet you're happy the Avs overpaid for Darcy Tucker ;)

They signed Avery because he can play and they think the reward will outweigh the risk of him getting injured. And Dallas needed more heart and fight than just Steve Ott.

September 15, 2008  04:16 PM ET

What level did you coach Peter ??

September 15, 2008  04:19 PM ET

Atom A and pee wee AAA. Not sayin i coached NHL but was responding to Yodas comments about never seeing a hockey game. Whew...this is a lotta pressure....flame at will.

September 15, 2008  05:47 PM ET

Peter Forsberg was a banger, and see how it ended up for him. The math is quite simple really. If you play a physical game, you're more likely to get injured and have your career shortened. Modano ain't a banger, and he's still around.

Anyway, I'm glad he's still around. I've always liked him. A hard working professional. No whining, no pouting, just pure professionalism. He's had a somewhat similar career to Steve Yzerman I would say.. good numbers (although Yzerman's are better, yes), one-team career, turned into a defensive specialist at the end of the career, and more of a lockerroom presence than a producer on the ice.

Not saying it's a bad thing though, both Yzerman and Modano are players I have the highest respect for.

Any final four appearance will rejuvenate anybody.
