Cavs clearing salary to keep LeBron
Even though there's been no announcement, the Cavaliers have waived swingman Billy Thomas. The transaction occurred on Sept. 8. After the signing of Delonte West on Friday, the Cavs now have 15 players under contract heading into the start of training camp. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Thomas had a contract worth $826,269 for the 2008-09 season. But it wasnt guaranteed. West's contract starts at $3,850,000 this season, a source said. It's a three-year deal worth $12,705,000. He will be paid $4,235,000 in 2009-10 and $4,620,000 in 2010-11. The third year might not be a club option, as once thought, but it's conditional. West has $500,000 in salary protection in the third year. If he's on the roster by a certain date -- perhaps by July 1, 2010 -- his contract will become guaranteed. But the Cavs can waive him and he would be owed $500,000. The Cavs are obviously trying to retain their flexibility for the summer of 2010 when All-Star forward LeBron James becomes an unrestricted free agent (assuming he opts out of that season on his contract).

Cleveland is in a no-win situation. If you want to keep Lebron then you will have to do w/ average NBA players. That means no championship. If you try to get stars to help out Lebron then they can't afford to keep Lebron because of the cap space. But maybe there is a chance for a championship. If Lebron really wants to stay in Cleveland then he has to sacrifice a little bit. He won't go hungry and he will still make a lot of money from endorsements.

Yeah they better be. Because all signs point to New York, New York. So the chopping better start now. Should have started last year. But It may not be anything the can do about it. He may have his mind made up.

That's a very highly unlikely dream situation. To go to LA they would have to be so far in the Luxury Tax penalty they'd have to open a second mortgage on the Staples Center... Seriously, think about that. Lebron + Kobe = Salary Cap alone.... then add in any other players and each one is probably luxury tax...
Lebron to NY is the most likely, especially the Nets since they're building up a youth movement now that may pan out to having budding stars by the time he opts out of his final year...

Lebron is not staying in Cleveland. You see his tirades by going to Cleveland Browns games and Cleveland Indians games wearing Yankees or Cowboy jerseys. Cleveland fans should be screaming out of their lungs with the act of betrayal. You do not see Kobe going to LA sport events wearing other cities jerseys. Lebron is a local kid from there that why it is even more astonishing and disturbing. Lebron will either play for New York or Dallas but never going to win a championship.

he's gone, and he's a chump in terms of personality anyway. dude ONLY roots for teams that win which means he has no hometown loyalty, or any real loyalty. i'd say the odds the cavs resign him are as likely as him playing for the Chicago Blackhawks. it is funny that he seems to absolutely hate cleveland teams though...

Act of betrayal? Paranoid much? Where's the law that says you have to root for the local teams? Akron isn't Cleveland, either.
The Cavs don't have to clear salary. James would have Bird rights and thus the Cavs can go over the cap to sign him (I think). Though it doesn't matter: he'll be on the Nets in 2010.

By 2010 the Nets will still be in New Jersey. The arena has been delayed yet again. The earliest the arena will be completed is 2012, and I can't see LeBron willing to play in the swamps of the Meadowlands for 2 seasons.
I don't know guys, to me LeBron to New York is wishful thinking. I just can't see him leaving the Cavs.

Cleveland is the picture of mis-management.....
Great- lower your long-term payroll-
LBJ wants to win NOW. He ain't going to want to re-sign with a team that has NO DECENT PERSONEL when his time comes.
He makes more in endorsments than his NBA contract- he won't squabble for a mil or 2 per.....he wants PLAYERS

Lebron James is going to Los Angeles in 2010/2011 to team up with Kobe and Dwayne Wade to reform Team USA. Dwight Howard may also follow suit.

That's an interesting question.... does it apply in this situation? Technically, under the terms of the new contract he negotiated a few years ago to add the extra years and money -- he has a player-option for 2010-11 season at 17 mil, and would have opted out of that year if he's on the market... can they still go over if he opts out of his final year?

Prince James is just rubbing it in to Cleveland fans saying their are to small time for his huge ego. If Cleveland retain him and that is a huge IF, they will never win a championship. Lebron game needs a lot of work because he is too one dimensional. He either jack up bad threes which he do not shoot a higher percentage or drive it to the hole for a dunk. He do not play defense because I see a lot of his counterparts he guard just have huge games against him. Prince James needs a consistent jumper to make him a complete player like Kobe and Michael Jordan. Until that happens, he just going to be just a flash superstar who never going to win.

cleveland should build a team not tear one down.. cutting salaries is only gonna make the team worse.. they need to be attractive to keep james... i don't see him staying in clevland.. he is not a throwback athelete that cares about bringing his home town a championship.. he's all about the money..

Ricky Davis and Iverson?
Surely you jest. Cleveland doesn't want either one of those ball hogging bums on their team.
