Cards promise to be more aggressive

If the St. Louis Cardinals overachieved in the first half and failed to satisfy expectations in the second, general manager John Mozeliak pledges a more satisfying time should be in store for all. "Last year, I thought the only way we could improve was through addition by subtraction," Mozeliak said, referring to trades that sent away disenchanted third baseman Scott Rolen and center fielder Jim Edmonds. "This year is different. I think we will identify holes and aggressively pursue closing them in a number of ways." The Cardinals enter the upcoming offseason with far more payroll flexibility than last winter, when they faced payments to numerous players (Carpenter, Mark Mulder and Juan Encarnacion) unavailable for at least significant portions of 2008. The abrupt release of utility player Scott Spiezio and La Russa's abandonment of second baseman Adam Kennedy added to the payroll dysfunction. Closer Jason Isringhausen's tenure with the club likely ended after seven seasons and last week's arm surgery. Starting pitchers Kyle Lohse and Braden Looper also are pending free agents, as is middle reliever Russ Springer. "I believe we look at it as having a lot more flexibility going forward," Mozeliak said.

They have been aggressive drinkers, drivers, users, liars...all that's left is aggressive playing.

You are an imbecile and that's The Truth. Go spout your worthless drivel elsewhere.

Aggressive? if st. louis was really aggressive they would have signed Bonds at a league minimum, when you've got the two greatest hitters batting 3-4 in a lineup.. it will make pitchers tremble with fear. I hate bonds, but they had a chance to sign wht could have been the greatest offensive duo this decade... LaRussa wanted it, but the owner shot that down. I always thought that you do what it takes to win.. thats why LA is in first place, they took a chance at Manny being Manny. And Manny behaved and are in first and laughing at the NL west.

Truth - what Superheat said.......

I'm glad to see Mozeliak coming out and saying this. Cards fans will hold him to it.....they played very well this year, considering all the changes, and with the money that is going to be freed up....they have no reason not to go out and make the needed improvements.

Time to open up the purse strings and sign some free agents and trade for Hanley Ramirez.

Smokey says "you too can prevent forest fires by putting Ron Villone in the old folks home."

but yeah the Cardinals don't need to spend a ton of cash on new players, just resign Looper, kill Scott Boras, allowing us to resign Lohse, resign Springer spranger, and add one or two solid relievers. In that order.
