Mexican side Chivas Guadalajara is considering appointing former Barcelona legend Ronald Koeman as its new manager. Koeman was approached by the Mexican FA over the position of national team manager before, but turned the offer down. Nevertheless, the boss could be heading there after all.

great coach, led PSV to several titles as a coach, but was in a terrible situation over at Valencia.

I agree, he's a solid coach. Went to Valencia at the wrong time.

Jorge Vergara (Chivas owner) is really flexing his muscle by trying to appoint him as coach for Chivas.

I would've thought Chivas would be hiring a Mexican manager, given their history and all.

Im really shocked by this announcement. the history with Chivas and keeping everything domestic goes outside of tradition. I do like Koeman as a coach but not for Chivas. My thoughts are that chivas would appoint a coach within the league with ties to Chivas, for club recognition sakes. Vergara knows what bringing in an outsider could potentially do to the fanbase. A good example would be Liverpool in the EPL, as far as fan unrest is concerned. Times are changing tho for Mexican soccer, the announcement of La Volpe and Ericsson as Natl Managers, but one place I had not expected to change would be Chivas

This to me would only help Mexico. It looks like Mexico will start hiring european coaches and to me they should because almost every good coach in Mexico has already been coach for the MNT. Now with Koeman he'll make Chivas play faster and will make it easier for the players who play their to understand and play better with the NT that is now coached by an european in Ericksson.

Yup, this would be great for Mexican Soccer.

Chivas has not always had a Mexican coach. They've been coached by Beenhaker (95), Ricardo Ferretti (97-00), Ricardo Lavolpe (89-90), Oscar Ruggeri (01-02) Hans Westerhof (03-04 and some in 06) and Xavier Azcargota (05). The reason he is going after Koeman is because he wants a fresh face on the team. The last 3 or 4 coaches have been assistants or worked with the youth system. Lets just hope this one wont turn out like the time they brought Azcargota from Real Madrid's youth system.

so its not ok for Chivas to non-mexican players, but ok for them to have non-mexican coaches?? thought Chivas was known for being 100% mexican, or is this an old view of things Chivas??

mundo001- nevermind, i guess you answered that... guess i shouldve read all the comments :D

It's kool man. Well the 100% Mexican dates back to the das the team was made. The team was created by a Belgian and wanted to bring more Belgians to replace the Mexicans on the team. They got rid of the Belgian and hence the tradition of all mexican players.

I believe that we will se change in that policy. With the contreversy of Jesus Padilla being born in Texas (supposedly) I think it will soon be anyone with Mexican ancestry. Or it should change because of the large number of Mexicans living in the United States.

As for coaches, Chivas has had international coaches throughout its history. I believe in the 50s they had an argentinan coach and even in the 70s.

I like the idea of Koeman because Mexico is notorious for reusing mediocre coaches. Teams recycle coaches and the same losing formula happens. Chivas would be different in that they wouldnt look outside, but train the people from the inside. Right now there isnt a "big name" assistant, such as Benjamin Galindo (Cruz Azul), Chepo De La Torre (Toluca), or Daniel Guzman (santos). With Koeman at least u have a fresh face, and not one of those recycled coaches.

Flores wasn't even the first candidate for coach when he was hired, the son of Chava Reyes was. They couldnt hire him tho because of his contract with Necaxa. Flores was an interim coach who previously worked in the youth system. He had a good run, but its time to pass the torch.

Why would he want to go there, surely there must be job offers from European clubs he could take up rather than going to a footballing backwater like Mexico.
