As the deadline nears for Jason Giambi to decide if he will meet with George Mitchell, lawyers representing the Yankees designated hitter, the Players Association and Major League Baseball are closing in on a deal that would allow him to speak to investigators. Discussions are expected to continue throughout the weekend with an announcement coming possibly as early as Monday.

I am sick of the "GIAMBINO", he is an admitted steroid user in court and should be kicked out of the league. The yankees are playing better without him anyways so what are they waiting for. Buyout his contract and tell him so long. Giambi SUCKS!!!

Cheaters never prosper, but they sure do profit.

June 16, 2007  12:32 PM ET

Well Cubbiebear21, they can't buy out his contract, thats why they haven't yet. Secondly,( and I'm not trying to defend Giambi at all)if they were to kick every steroid user out of the league, we wouldn't have a league left. What the MLB needs to do is just cut its losses. They made their bed, now they have to lay in it. Continue the heavy testing, and hope to get away from the steroid scandal. But by forcing players to spout out names, all Selig and Mitchell are doing is keeping the story alive. They should be trying to get people to forget about it(and that's not a hard thing to do with the American public), instead of spending $2milliion a month on this witch hunt.

Several years after BALCO, and people are still talking about it. MLB won't get people to forget. MLB isn't like American Idol, where 4 years from now, people will be on to the next biggest thing and no one will care about Clay, Ruben, etc..

Baseball has history. Part of what makes MLB what it is, is the history of it all. The statistics. When something comes along to warp the statistics, and the history of the game, MLB must do something about it. The fans, and historians will never forget.

BALCO will not just go away. No matter how much Selig wishes it would.

This is such a mess, I'm tired of this nonsence...

Giambi took his medicine like a man last year and played pretty well. We all say that the players should admit what they did, but they do (or come close) and we hang them. **** on Bud Selig. he is mad because Giambi put him on blast. Truth is truth Bud. He needs to stand up and be a man if he expects anyone else to. he shouldn't MAKE Giambi cooperate with Mitchell or ANYTHING unless he demands the same from EVERYONE else.

Zwitek,

If Bud Selig wasn't running this witch hunt it would make it much easier to forget about. Remember in 1994 when the players went on strike? Everyone thought that baseball was screwed after that, and now it's bigger then it's ever been. People may not forget, but they will definitely forgive...it's the American way. Yes, it may take a while (because of Barry and the HR chase), but eventually a guy like Arod or Pujols will break the record, and everyone will forget. Let's not forget, baseball is more popular now then it ever has been...even after the steroid scandal. Just let them play the game, keep testing, and continue punishing guys who fail tests. Why do people care who did steroids in the past? It's over, and there's nothing you can do about it now.

Short nap. Geez, I wish I was Rip Van Winkle, then all of these useless stories would be forty years behind me.

I don't want to defend Giambi, but, he has been the most honest person in baseball when it comes to the juice and HGH, (well, who hasn't written a book); that isn't saying much. MLB is PO'd because Giambi is right when he said everyone owes an apology. MLB doesn't apologize for anything. This MLB investigation is a joke like congressional hearings are a joke. Bud Selig , just quit, please. The World Series were cancelled; you looked the other way in order to build the game back up. You sold your soul.

Just move on. You blew it.

I GOT IT!!!,

I do find it ironic that Selig is the arbiter of what's right and wrong, when as an owner was part of one of the most wretched scandals the sport ever faced. Collusion.

Baseball can't be killed, but it can turn fans off for a time, and short term profits can, and will take a hit. The thing is, when Arod or Pujols break the record, the BALCO issue will come up all over again. Hopefully by then, WADA, and MLB will have come up with a secret test for HGH that will catch players by the hundreds, and they'll be weeded out of the game. Yeah, I'm a dreamer. :)

If he's going to go after giambi he will have to go after the one and only Bonds, why is he is afraid of Bonds. Everyone knows he juiced, I am a female and I know it. I think Selig should not just focus on one player esp. the one who admitted it what more does he want from him. I just don't understand the sudden interest in Giambi, after he went out after an injury,

June 18, 2007  01:25 PM ET

if selig had any balls, he'd go after bonds first, but he's afraid of bury bonds - plus giambi admitted his - so he should get suspended for life (like football - then he can comeback next year)

Seriously, what are execs of the MLB doing? Do they even know?
