Weis 'worked up' before game

Several Notred Dame players said they had never seen Charlie Weis as worked up as he was in the locker room before Saturday's game. Weis said that was because he has been unable to shake the memory last year's embarrassing 38-0 loss to Michigan. ''I remembered standing there on that sideline humiliated at how things were going, and I said, ''Things are going to change,''' he said. ''The message I wanted to say to them before we went out of the locker room is, today is the day you've got to make a change.''

They are still giving Fat Charlie a disproportionate amount of the overall T&R college stories (as they have been for the last 3 months) but today I have to applaud SI for at least finally changing out the photo.

35 - 17 GO IRISH!!!!!!
ND uOFm

BEAT MSU!!!!!

September 15, 2008  08:12 AM ET

Nothing really changed with ND. Michigan gave them 6 turnovers, yet kept it a relatively close game. Michigan lost all its talent, ND is supposedly bringing in class after class of top ranked prospects.

McGuffie ran all over ND like he was on a video game. ND fans gotta be worried that Michigan is further along rebuilding in their first year with a new coach than ND was in their second (maybe third year)...

Michigan completely under-whelmed me Saturday, but it wasn't the only team on the field to do so...

Weis was "worked up" before the game? He probably had for breakfast only four Egg McMuffins instead of eight to keep the hunger pains going and fuel that competitive fire.

September 15, 2008  08:35 AM ET

Mad props to the ND sideline for being able to stand Weis back up after he fell over. Also, Weis' acrobatic climb to get into the cart was impressive as well. It must have been the four Egg McMuffins he passed on...

Of course he was "worked up", his job was on the line. You cannot tell me that had ND lost that game that SLIGHTLY LESS FAT TUNA would be in a short leash?

MICH just does not have the right personnel man. I think the whole season is going to be like what happened Sat. Flashes here and there, but nothing consistent. But McGuffie is a STUD!

September 15, 2008  08:52 AM ET

What I saw was a blowout. You can blame it on turnovers or laugh at how fat the opposing coach is but the bottom line is that was a blowout.

September 15, 2008  09:23 AM ET

You can make all the jokes about Charlie you want but ND controlled all aspects of the game. True, Michigan had all the turnovers but ND did create those and had to play in the same conditions as Michigan. Both programs are rebuilding, but ND made the plays when they needed them. And I do agree, McGuffie is a stud!

September 15, 2008  09:41 AM ET

You don't want to get Jabba the coach worked up! That game was a special olympics event. I'm sure every player on both teams got a medal and a hug and sent home happy. At the end of the year neither of these teams will have 6 wins and Mich. may not get 3.

September 15, 2008  09:43 AM ET

What year is this for Charlie Weis? It is hard for me to say they are still rebuilding. Michigan is obviously rebuilding. If RichRod is given time they will become the class of the Big 10. He recruits speed and that is what has doomed OSU in the big non-conference games.

September 15, 2008  09:58 AM ET

Michigan spotted ND 21 points within the first early minutes. You won't win games that way. Weis has made the right decision (kudos to him calling his old bosses to get advice) to let others make the play calls. The true test of Notre Dame will be against the always schizophrenic MSU. With the poor play of Michigan with the 6 T/Os, ND will need to prove themselves over a team that is bit more experienced.

September 15, 2008  10:41 AM ET

Good point Warden, MSU will be a barometer of sorts for the Irish. But there are encouraging signs on the horizon, overall I like the team speed and aggressiveness so far.

September 15, 2008  11:01 AM ET

So, he weakened his knee jumping around prior to the game? The hit just finished it off?

McGuffie is going to mature to an unreal player. If you get the opp watch the highlight reel of Sam in HS on youtube. He has great moves, great vision, and blazing speed.

September 15, 2008  11:07 AM ET

The game was a joke. The Wolverines couldn't even beat themselves off at this point. The first two touchdowns were a gift by the slippery-fingered Michigan kick-return crew. The third was a gift from the officiating crew, which (as the announcers agreed) charged the Michigan DB with a bullsh-t pass-interference penalty on a 50+ yard toss. Michgan had more running yards and passing yards than ND. A win is a win, but if the ND faithful believe that this game was some indication that ND has arrived, they are sorely mistaken. ND still blows. Even a broken clock is right twice per day.

September 15, 2008  11:11 AM ET

At first glance, I thought FN made a typo, thinking that Charlie had "worked out'. If he was lighter on his feet...

September 15, 2008  11:36 AM ET

Eagle 1,

There are three phases to every game: Offense, Defense, and Special Teams. Notre Dame covered very well during Special Teams, Michigan had a few good accomplishments on Special Teams as well, especially when the Punter ran for a first down. I saw an inexpierenced Notre Dame team building on things that they did right last week, seeking to improve from week to week. Let's not forget that Michigan front 7 is a beast: all returning starters. I thought Notre Dame's offense line is communicating better and playing better as a whole unit. Michigan's spread offense was a beast in getting McDuffie in the open field. The run defense needs alittle work in space, which they will only get better at. Michigan doesn't have scrubs on there team, just not the right personel that Rod wants to run his spread, but the talent is there. They will win the rest of the season.

September 15, 2008  11:40 AM ET

Doe anyone else see this? Michigan seems like (to me) they are not playing with any passion. I know they are in a rebuilding year, but there still needs to be more emotion; especially buy Rich Rod. Plays that should piss him off and yell and big plays that should get a coach fired up just don't seem to phase him. I don't think he is getting his players fired up.

September 15, 2008  11:41 AM ET

Michigan stinks this year and ND barely beat San Diego State. A win is a win but I think ND is still lousy and will want Skip Holtz before the end of the year.

September 15, 2008  12:10 PM ET

ND won because they did what they couldn't do last year...take advantage of the other teams mistakes. That in itself is a sign of progress. I believe that Michigan will win with RR but I have to say for a school and program as classy as MU I am surprised by the venom spewed by so many of their fans after the game. I have heard them blame the loss on their own team, the refs, the weather, Charlie's weight...anything but the fact that ND (statistics be damned) just flat out beat them. I would expect such lack of class from a BC fan (Eagle 1) but you guys are better than that.
