Indiana fans staying away

Indiana University officials hoped last year's trip to the Insight Bowl, coupled with eight home games this season, would result in more football fans flocking to Memorial Stadium. Shuffling in might be closer to the truth. Through two home games, IU is averaging 30,095 fans, nearly 7,000 fewer than a year ago and worse than the vast majority of teams that played in a bowl last season. Moreover, while attendance improves for Big Ten Conference games, IU drew fewer fans for Western Kentucky and Murray State this season than for corresponding games against Indiana State and Akron last year. IU marketing director Jeff Cieply said trends change slowly. He said if IU can string together multiple bowl seasons, attendance will grow.

The fans thought it was basketball season ... where Tom Crean will suit up the team manager, water girl and the captain of the chess team.

You'll get even fewer fans showing up after Ball State comes in this Saturday and wins in Bloomington. Go Cards.

I don't know about that. It looks like our family will be making the journey down to Bloomington to watch our Cardinals attempt to hit 4-0. That's a few extra because of Ball State. :)

im from iu and all i can say is...schedule better games! No one wants to go see iu play Murray State...how about scheduling someone thats actually an FBS school.

September 15, 2008  06:39 PM ET

Ball State is the real deal. They almost won in Lincoln last year, and return just about everyone. I've got them picked to beat Indiana in my Pick-'Em.
