Schiano: Teel still Rutgers' QB

After Thursday night's embarrassing loss to North Carolina, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano knows that his team has to pick itself up off the mat in time for its next game. But that might be easier said than done. His senior quarterback, Mike Teel, has looked like a wide-eyed freshman, throwing five interceptions and only one touchdown in two losses. Teel and the Scarlet Knights heard plenty of boos throughout Thursday's 44-12 home loss, but Schiano is steadfast in his support of the quarterback.

I wonder how the possibilty of coaching at Penn State is looking now?

September 15, 2008  11:16 AM ET

Rutgers has a nice little program, but they do not beat the good teams and never have...There is more sound than substance to the program. I think he stayed one year too long. Closer look tells us they are good at beating the have nots, and are fodder for the haves.

Teel is still the QB because Jobu Lovelace isn't a passer. The guy can run but his passing skills are weak.

Teel hasn't played well but he's the only option Rutgers has right now.

September 15, 2008  01:27 PM ET

Lovelace isnt a passer because he is never put in the game to pass and there are 4 Qbs who suit up every week. At this point any of the three can't do any worse. Teel has a STRONG receiving corps (4 deep), a good running game (Young above average and two solid backs behind him), a good O-line (he has forever to make a bad choice), and a big physical TE. He just isn't a good QB and has not been one since Schiano (stupidly) sat Ryan Hart in 05 to play him because Teel was threatening to transfer. His stats last season are so padded by the crappy teams Rutgers played early in the season. His drop off in the second half last year was because of better competition not a hurt thumb.

...and now Rutgers will quietly fade back into annonymity...

September 15, 2008  07:53 PM ET

I'm not ready to agree with you eyesWIDEopen just yet, but there is certainly something very wrong internally wrong at Rutgers. Have any diehard Rutgers fans looked into why the Director of Recruiting Operations resigned last week suddenly to take back his old job as a HS football coach, or what is it about numerous reports and descriptions on forums, and message boards about AD Bob Mulcahy walking around the stadium like a somber zombie during the game on Thursday night? Some off-the-field events have this program stymied at the moment.

"I'm not ready to agree with you eyesWIDEopen just yet, but there is certainly something very wrong internally wrong at Rutgers"

What's wrong Keith?
They are Rutgers. They had a good couple of years feeding off a weak Big East.
They are and have been a mediocre program. I'm not trying to 'pit them down'....jsut stating facts.
Can the program get bigger, become something? - sure-
but they AREN'T something NOW

September 16, 2008  07:50 PM ET

jgb, I think you have me all wrong here. I am completely aware what Rutgers is. I come from a family of realistic, long-time loyal RU fans (meanwhile I have been a lifelong USC fan). I agree with you - except for your claim the Big East was weak a few years back. What I was trying to talk about is the notion some bad things have happened in recent days off the field with the Scarlet Knights. To further support what you're saying this could be the end of progress for RU if and when we begin to learn about all of those big-name verbal commits like Savage bailing out in weeks to come. Hope that clears this up...

Do you think he may go to Penn State if the Jo Pa "decides" to retire?

September 17, 2008  06:26 AM ET

Jabril1217, I have to believe his stock is plummeting, fair or not, right now with how this RU team is playing. I wasted my Thursday night last week going to the game with my family and it was the worst effort I have seen in a long time from a football team. Plus, I still sense something "bad" has happened their internally and resignations and/or firings of others in the athletic department are coming. By the way, there isn't a position on the field an RU starter would even be third on the depth chart at USC...

September 17, 2008  07:17 AM ET

I can hear Rutgers...falling asleep...softly....

bye, bye.

I am not so sure they would want him. Seems to be a one hit wonder.

Rutgers has a good thing going, but will never be a consistent winner until they convince the cream of the crop to stay in state. I know Anthony Davis was a huge signing a few years ago, but they need to sign guys like Moreno from Georgia and Brown from Uconn. Their lack of a legit running back this year (sorry, 5'8 180 lbs running backs aren't going to cut it) on top of an average offensive line have hurt Mike Teels chances to have a productive year. Not many promising kids playing this yeah for the Knights, so that has to be a concern.
