Rangers still mum on Shanahan

As of last night, Rangers GM Glen Sather had apparently still not made a contract offer to free agent Brendan Shanahan, who has spent the summer turning away other suitors while hoping to extend his marriage with the Rangers into a third season. There is no indication that the Rangers either have invited or will invite Shanahan to camp on the same kind of no-strings attached tryout scenario under which Petr Nedved will attempt to make the team. It is unclear whether Shanahan would accept such an offer if extended.

How disrespectful of the Rangers. A "no-strings attached tryout scenario" for Shanny? Total lack of class move.

It's Shanny sit down and figure something out.

Agreed LGP. They should be thrilled to have a vet like Shanny (who has turned down other offers) looking to play for the team. If nothing else, he'd make good trade-bait for the Rangers at the trade-deadline as there are plenty of teams who wouldn't mind adding his experience and grit as an ingredient for a Cup-run.

I just don't get why some teams aren't jumping at Shanny and quick, especially the Rangers, who have leadership issues. Shanny scored 23 goals last season, far from embarassing. He would be willing to take far less money to stay in New York, and not whine about any role he is given. The Rangers are staring a gift horse in the mouth on this one. I hope Shanny signs with the Devils and scores 30 again, and ends up knocking the Blueshirts out of the playoffs, with their unproven lineup.

He would be great deadline trade bait, especially if he signs for a cap friendly number. This in NOT Petr Nedved were talking about.

The New York Rangers organization should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. We speak of Sundin being bigger than the game...well Sather thinks HE is bigger than the game. Who would not want to give this Hall of Famer his last year's opportunity? Over my 44 years of being a New York Ranger Fan (I live in Canada so that is something!) We have shared some really trying times. This is the first time I can say I'm embarrassed.

September 16, 2008  08:46 AM ET

The Rangers probably think they will have a shot at Sundin.
Seems to me to be a match. Neither is capable of making a decision.

Though not being dealt with in the best way right now, I think he will sign and sign soon in NY...I hope he does anyway

BETTMAN S***S

September 16, 2008  10:45 AM ET

Spiny's been away too long...probably, "tinkering" perhaps.

September 16, 2008  10:49 AM ET

Hey we would take him back in Detroit in a New York Minute. I sorta miss the Irish Jig they played when he scored a goal. Great teacher and player. More players need to emulate his professionalism. Sather Sucks!!!!!!!!!!!

September 16, 2008  10:51 AM ET

Shanny should tell the NYR to eff off and go somewhere else

September 16, 2008  11:29 AM ET

The fact that Sather extended an invite to Petr Nedved and not Shanny should piss him off to no end. They haven't made any kind of offer to him, and yet he still keeps turning down other offers. Shanny needs to tell Sather F*** you I'm out of here. There are plenty of other teams who would kill to have him in the line up and pay him well for it.

September 16, 2008  12:09 PM ET

I don't know what is up with the Rangers. I am a die-hard fan and with Jaromir Jagr leaving, Sean Avery gone, Darius Kaspiritus gone and now they don't want to get Shanny...I agree with the above comment that they are loosing their continuity.

September 16, 2008  12:32 PM ET

Please come on back to the REDWINGS. Shanny has Class dripping off of him.. Unlike the rangers.

September 16, 2008  12:32 PM ET

It must be a mental disorder that Sather has. If a player expresses a desire to stay there and play, he turns the cold shoulder to them. Maybe Shanny would have been better off with some reverse psychology. Tell Sather he's not sure about staying with NY. Certainly the offer would have been extended immediately then.

September 16, 2008  12:58 PM ET

When you have nothing to say, why say anything?

September 16, 2008  01:43 PM ET

Shanny asked for this problem when he left Detroit for New York .. if he stayed he would still
be earning 4 mil plus .. but he was greedy .. He made his own bed and now he has to sleep
in it .. if the other teams think .. that he's worth the big bucks .. he would have signed long time
ago .. The cap does not allow teams to pay 2.mil a goal .. with 23 the count that would be
4.6 mil .. when they can sign players at less then 1/8 of the cost .. Is Shanny worth 4.6 ..
the answer is a No ..

September 16, 2008  04:07 PM ET

I must admit that the above math has me more than a little confused.

September 16, 2008  07:43 PM ET

OMG if the above math confused you, I'm lost too.....The reason Shanny hasn't gotten a contract yet, because someobdy in the Rangers front office read that spill. He lost me at and everyone else ready his short blog...LOL

September 16, 2008  10:53 PM ET

Baka...check your math. Shanny's 23 goals for $4.6MM is not $2M a goal but rather $200k/goal. Your 1/8th comment is also interesting since I doubt the Rangers will sign many 23 goal scorers for $600k.
