Ga. Tech coach: Broadcasters are 'morons'

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson doesn't pull any punches. Johnson was asked on his Sunday teleconference about his decision to go for it on 4th-and-7 from the Georgia Tech 34 with 2:24 left. The Jackets trailed 20-17. He said that while watching a replay of the game, he heard the TV announcers questioning the move, too. "I think you've got to try to win the game," he said. "The guys who do the game, they're morons -- I don't worry about what they say." Josh Nesbitt was sacked, and Virginia Tech took over. The Jackets got the ball back on their 5 with 25 seconds left. They had no timeouts, having used their last one before the fourth-down try, and could not get into field-goal range. Johnson said he would have done it differently only if he had "crystal glasses" to foresee the Jackets could pin the Hokies deep on a punt, force a three-and-out, and get the ball back in great field position. Johnson said he also heard skepticism on the broadcast about his decision to go for two with 9:28 left. The Jackets had just scored to cut the deficit to 17-15. "What good does one point do you," he said.

Most of these announcers don't have the guts to make the calls that these coaches make during the critical times of the game. These guys should remember that when the coaches make these decisions, not only is the game on the line, but for some so are their jobs. Would these same announcers make the same calls they do if their jobs were on the line? Heck, most just state the obvious anyways!

Broadcasters are Morons? Exhibit A: Brent Musberger

lol

September 16, 2008  10:10 AM ET

I'm a UGA man, but dang these announcers get on my nerves being so know it all, just call the game or get a coaching job!

September 16, 2008  11:04 AM ET

So many of these announcers have never played one down of football in their lives, but they are considered experts. What's wrong with this picture?

September 16, 2008  11:15 AM ET

Anybody remember the Orange Bowl in 1983 when Coach Osborne (NE) decided to try to win the game instead of go for the tie? Same thing. You just gotta live with your decisions and I think the Georiga Tech coach made the right decision for him at the time.

Exhibit 1A: All the rest, especially the moron on fox that calls baseball, you all know who I mean. Even Madden has lost it, boom boom has lost it's appeal now that he is an old man.

I could figure out what the broadcasters were talking about there with kicking a point after instead of going for two. I think there might have been some clock management at the end, but in the end Tech's defense couldn't hold the Hokies towards the end of the game.

September 16, 2008  11:35 AM ET

I meant couldn't, they were morons.

September 16, 2008  11:58 AM ET

The announcers were idiots on the two point conversion call. What good does 1 point do you when you are down by two late in the game? And the attempted 4th down conversion, that was PJ showing some balls. He apparently thought his chances of converting were higher than his D getting a 3 and out and him getting the ball back with enough time left to do anything. If he had gotten the ball back, it would have been with well under a minute left and a lot of grass between him and the end zone. I personally liked the call, I think getting a first down on that play was much more likely to happen than him getting into field goal range, and our kicker who is 2/6 on the season hitting it, in under a minute from the VT side of the field.

September 16, 2008  12:00 PM ET

@We're doomed

I think that's precisely what he's doing. He's manning up and saying he went with his best odds. His best odds were to go for the 4th down. With 2:23 left and a primarly running team, you need the ball in your hands, not the opponents.

VT is a notorious punt block team as well. Punting is sometimes your worst play against VT. I'm sure Beamer-ball factored into his equation too.

September 16, 2008  12:45 PM ET

not only did he show some balls, but you folks who agree with the announcers assume they would make the field goal--it would have been a 51 yarder--chances of making it were no better than getting the first down . . . yes, announcers generally only regurgitate whatever they've heard other media types say. Only a few (and generally they are former players/coaches) have a clue what they're talking about . . .

September 16, 2008  12:46 PM ET

A field goal try would have been 51 yards, not a chip shot and to punt from your opponent's 34 yardline would probably have resulted in a touchback and a net gain of 14 yards. Going for it and failing didn't really leave them worse off than either of the other two alternatives (assuming the FG was missed) plus it was probably going to be the best field position they would have.

September 16, 2008  12:56 PM ET

There is a reason they are in the booth and not on the sidelines.

September 16, 2008  01:10 PM ET

Does anyone here actually use their brain? He was at the Gtech 34, not Vtech's 34. There was 2:24 left and NO timeouts. Punting and getting a three and out would have at best gotten them the ball back at maybe their 35 or 40 with 25 seconds to go to try and get 35-40 yards and a field goal try. Going for it was the obviously RIGHT decision, and he doesn't have to "man-up" or anything else because he made the RIGHT call.

Now throwing deep on 3rd down - that was the mistake in my mind. They had been getting 4-5 yards a play, and a 4th and 2 is much more makeable than a 4th and 7...

September 16, 2008  01:23 PM ET

Come on folks... the GT kicker is 2-6 (FG) this year and has missed some EASY field goals of much shorter than that. He missed a 37 yarder earlier in the game. What makes you think he's going to nail a 40+ yarder to win the game in a hostile environment. He even had a PAT blocked earlier in the game that necessitated the 2-pt try. I would have reservations with a kicker in that situation myself.

I say he made the right call on the conversion AND the 4th down.

September 16, 2008  01:34 PM ET

not only did johnson show balls, he also showed common sense. most of those who don't agree with his decision assume they would make the field goal. But what they're forgetting is that it was a 51 yarder--some teams simply will punt rather than try a 51 yarder. Their chances of converting the 4th down were just as good as making the kick . . .

September 16, 2008  01:47 PM ET

Okay....I guess I have to re-iterate this again. People seem to be very perceptive around here.

They were at the GTECH 34! There was no 51-yard field goal attempt! I have no idea what you are all contemplating...
