How Yost's firing went down
Ned Yost never saw it coming. The manager of the Milwaukee Brewers knew his bosses were disappointed with the team's 3-11 record in September, including a four-game sweep in Philadelphia over the weekend that allowed the Phillies to draw even in the National League wild-card race. But Yost, 54, didn't think it would get him fired with only 12 games left in the season. But it did, with the announcement coming Monday. "No, I didn't see it coming," said Yost, who was in his sixth season at the helm of the Brewers. "The timing of it caught me off-guard. I just didn't see it coming." The Brewers didn't get to their team hotel until 3:30 a.m. but Yost was up less than four hours later, drinking coffee and walking down Michigan Ave., trying to come up with an answer to his team's September swoon. When Yost returned to his room, he got a call from general manager Doug Melvin, asking for a meeting. For a brief moment, a thought crossed his mind. "I said, 'Are they going to fire me?' I said, 'No, not with 12 games left,' " recalled Yost, who has a year left on his contract. But when Yost entered Melvin's room and owner Mark Attanasio was there also, the message was clear. 'When I saw Mark, I knew that was it," he said. The final straw apparently came Sunday, when the Brewers looked lifeless in losing both ends of a doubleheader to the Phillies, 7-3 and 6-1. Philadelphia pitched Jamie Moyer and Brett Myers on short rest in the series but Yost refused to do likewise with ace CC Sabathia, which might have upset his bosses.

He deserved to get fired. Philly pitched their guys on short rest while CC sat. This is the same Yost who had no problems with CC running up high pitch counts, but when the Brewers needed their ace as a stopper, Yost balked and it rightfully cost him his job. The organization gave him the tools to win this year, Yost chose not to use them when they were needed.

A pretty dumb move by the Brewers....

I think it's insane, ranks right up there with Baltimore owner Peter Angelos firing Davey Johnson after the 1997 season. Baltimore's record in 1997: 98 wins, 64 losses. Baltimore's best season since then: 79 wins, 83 losses.

Exactly. If things don't pan out, you wait what? Two more weeks? STUPID!!! But, what can you expect, this team is STILL being run by Bud Selig behind the curtain.

This is why the Brewers will always just be an average team. Fire the owner and the GM also.

This is turning into a colossal collapse. First the Brewers tank when September starts.......then ownership panicks and send Yost packing with two weeks left in the season??

yost was leading this team nowhere.....one collapse (last year), oh well get back after it. but now a second collapse, eerily similiar to last years. that's enough right there. why let him destroy the last two weeks of the season as well. let svuem run the team for the finally two weeks and hopefully get things kick started. maybe this will FINALLY be the end of rickie weeks leading off with his .230 average. and hopefully durham will be the started 2b the rest of the way through.
it was only a matter of time. finally, yost is toast.

Time will tell whether it was a good move. firing your manager with 12 games left is a gamble.

Listen... Sabathia has never pitched on short rest, and it was a TEAM VOTE... they valued their day off (Monday) more than having THE best pitcher in the NL right now on the mound, and presumably getting a win. The team chose rest over winning... Yost got jobbed.
I am officially rooting against the Brewers (ownership)

I'm a Cubs fan and like seeing the Brew crew in a tailspin, but this was just plain DUMB on their part. This is the first manager that has been able to get any life out of this team. I predict them going 3-9 the rest of the way.

It's funny the things people say when they don't watch the subject in question throughout the year. Saying Selig is behind the curtain is absurd. That is so old, give it up. Annanasio is an awesome owner and to compare his team to Bud's teams is ridiculous. Selig let all of our talent go, year in and year out. Mark not only has kept talent, but made great efforts to get more talent. Would Selig re-sign Braun or bring in CC? No way man. Honestly, Yost should've got his walking papers at the end of last season. Anybody that watched this team day in and out saw the poor decision making. Be it pitching (though CC's complete games I don't put in here,) or continuing to play struggling players like Hall or Weeks. Mark gave Yost another year, resigned talent, and brought in more talent, or preaching bat on ball, not homers. How in the hell does that make Mark classless? Because he stood with his manager too long and had ignorant faith in him? Give me a break. This was the only move they could do to try and salvage their season. This was an overdue move. My only regret is that this didn't happen earlier. Root against brewers ownership? Ignorance and idiocy at its finest.

Wrong cubs fan. Annanasio and Melvin is what brought life to the crew. Having ownership that actually invested in the team. Selig did NOTHING but screw the team and the fans year in and year out. Yost doesn't keep the talent, or resign the talent, or toss away the talent. GM and owner do that. Yost just bakes the pie with the ingredients they gave him. This team finally started going somewhere when they got an owner that gave a rats **** for the team and fans.

Sorry I seem so emotional about this. It's difficult after so many years to have a team that should do something, have it again rot away. And to read all of you lynching the wrong people makes me crazy. Ask any REAL brewer fan what they think of the crew's ownership and it will be a stark contrast to what you non-fans are saying.

There is no way to gauge this move, other than to say it was at very least quite rash. If the Brewers somehow make the playoffs how can anyone equate that to Yost's firing? Sure he's made some questionable calls, but give me a skipper that hasn't. Firing him at this time shows two things a.) a lack of class and b.) panic.
