Flyers tinkering with Briere line

Flyers coach John Stevens is tinkering with moving center Danny Briere to right wing on a line that includes center Mike Richards and left winger Simon Gagne. If Briere goes to wing, Carter would center the second line, and Glen Metropolit probably would center the third. In that scenario, 39-year-old Jim Dowd, who will try to make the team in training camp, would have a shot at being the fourth-line center.

That's a pretty impressive looking line...don't know what it would do to their overall line combos though. Does it make them too reliant on one big line?

I don't like the move...other than for the power-play.
Briere is comfortable at center and while he's not the greatest face-off man in the world, he can skate and move the puck from either side effectively like a centerman should and he's got great vision to dish the puck off to either winger.

Means nothing if Gagne's head isn't right

As a Pens fan I dont mind the move. It makes them alittle top heavy. As a fan of good hockey I'd keep him at center. Besides face-offs, which he's not too bad, he's got the skills of a great centerman like Yoda had said. Theres probably alot of teams that would like to have this problem.

The word 'Tinkering" doesn't belong in hockey

September 16, 2008  08:49 AM ET

Well...this thread should bring back all those Flyer fans today, who seemed to have disappeared since their exit from last yrs playoffs to the Pens.

Disappeared because they haven't been any Flyers threads other than turd Sundin stories.

There haven't been too many other threads for other teams either. A whole lot of "what's his name" and very little else.

They have to tinker because nobody wants to play with Danielle!

Thought I would act the Flyers fan today.

Briere and his -35 +/- can sit on the 4th line and PP!

While I agree that the line has potential, assumng Gagne can remember his own name, I can't get past this quote without laughing...it's true...no tinkering.

BETTMAN S***S
BETTMAN TINKERS

I think you meant BETTMAN tinckled.

September 16, 2008  11:20 AM ET

'Tinker' is far too benign a word for what Bettman does.

I wouldn't put Briere and Gagne on the wings.
I guess the idea is to have two fast wingers to quickly take position behind the defense but Gagne is coming back from injury. This would put hin in a position where he could get hurt very quicly on an opponent's back check.
Briere is also quick but not tough enough to stand the pounding from hard-hitting defensemen (e.g. NYR). He's a far better center and playmaker.

September 16, 2008  12:15 PM ET

I hope Gagne stays healthy. The Caps are coming on but you gotta be able to beat a team at full strength to really say you're really deserving.

And I think cmh_phx has something there. The Flyers will need Briere all season long, obviously enough, but also to be more of a presence in the later rounds of the playoffs if they make it that far.

Uh oh, I've already been nailed once this week. I hope the Redundancy Police don't get me next.......

Flyers tinkering with Briere line

And .... while you're at it tinker with his motivation too! Since Danny Briere signed that huge contract, he is not nearly as hungry and doesn't play nearly as hard as he did in Buffalo!

September 16, 2008  01:05 PM ET

Won't happen. And neither will Jim Dowd.

Hmmmmm . . . . . . . Gage / Richards / Briere . . . . . . .I think it'l be good for the team . . . .think about it for a moment . . . . that free's up Carter to do more on a second line with either Lupol and Hartnell. A third Line centered by Metro with Upshall ( who should be on the 2nd unit) and either Giroux or Asham . . . . Either way you look at it , the team has balance on all lines . . . . . . that's more than what most teams can say about themselves . . . . . . .
