Referee Hoculi's future in doubt?

Ed Hochuli's acknowledgement that he erred on a call late in Sunday's San Diego-Denver game will mean lower grades for one of the NFL's highest profile referees. "Officials are held accountable for their calls. They are graded on every play of every game," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Monday. "Ed has been an outstanding official for many years, but he will be marked down for this call. Under our evaluation system, an official's grades impact his status for potentially working the playoffs and ultimately whether or not he is retained."

C'mon, it's not like he made the bad call on purpose. He acknowledged he blew it. Life goes on. It's not like play-offs of 2005 when you really had to wonder if the refs were getting THAT bad or if something else was going on.

"Officials are held accountable for their calls." Does that include the "no-calls" that some offficials may lean toward if they are going to be "marked" for their "bad" calls? Just curious.....

Yeah I agree he's human and admitted he was wrong. This guy easily one of tyhe better refs in the game.

What are the officials getting marked down for missing 2 facemask calls in last nights MNF game?? Every official is gonna miss a call every now and then, but this whistle rule has got to be changed. If anything, Hoc should have called intentional grounding on the Cutler play, he did after all, see it as an incomplete pass. He's a great official though, I'd hate to see this affect his career.

Of course, had he done this during a Skins game, I'd be calling for his head. Tough break for Charger fans, I feel for ya.

Ed is one of the best---he will hopefully still be on the leagues list of best by mid-season. At least he owned it on the field...other don't.

One mistake and his future is in doubt? Come on now. Whoever was in charge of watching the Rams O-line the other day and decided Tuck getting mauled each play wasn't holding should be on job-watch not Hoculi.

September 16, 2008  07:52 AM ET

That's life man. If the Broncos and Chargers are tied for a playoff spot, this came will comeback to haunt them. But the NFL should take blame too for that dumb rule. What's the point in having instant replay if you see a mistake, but can't change it?

Ed Hochuli isn't going anywhere.......THIS IS SO A NON-STORY!!!!

Not to mention that BAD interference call......I saw how you conveniently left that out.

Ed is one of the Best "zebra's" out there.

He made one mistake.

Aint that the truth

Love watching a "premier" QB personally give up 14 points in 14 seconds. ....................over rated!!!

September 16, 2008  08:14 AM ET

morning all ... GO COWBOYS! ... since T&R won't give us one ...

and the only peeps out for Hoculi's head is apparently ESPN ... they won't shut up about it ..

September 16, 2008  08:14 AM ET

just a drive by ... y'all have a good 'un ...

Hey, I'm no Eagle fan either, I hate both of your teams equally. Was just stating that there were quite a few calls missed. What was the ruling on that one kickoff?? Illegal block in the back, receiving team, and Dallas rekicks from the same exact spot??

September 16, 2008  08:19 AM ET

ONE call and we're talking about canning the guy?? watch ANY nfl game EVER...ok, better yet, watch a colts game! they get calls so many times i'm half convinced Tony Dunjesus pays em off. the guy messed up, get over it. if you're going to downgrade officials based on HORRIBLE calls, then do it for EVERY game...in EVERY situation. some of the officials are complete garbage

September 16, 2008  08:23 AM ET

It is more of an issue with the rule, let the call be reversed.

September 16, 2008  08:23 AM ET

puhleeeze,
he is a poster child for the NFL system.....'cause the rest of us have NEVER made a mistake? Maybe not on such a national stage....

September 16, 2008  08:26 AM ET

I'm just glad the NFL admitted they made a mistake and called him out for this. He cost the Chargers the game. Was he the only reason? No, Brandon Marshall and Jay Cutler had alot to do with it as well. But they still recovered the fumble and had a chance to run the clock out.

September 16, 2008  08:26 AM ET

That pass interference was awesome.Loved the way he pulled the guy right into him and got away with it.......kind of made up for the 2 face mask penalties that weren't called.Good game though.

Could ultimately cost the Chargers a playoff spot. They remind me of the SNL skit "lowered expectations".
