Deron Williams was among a group of University of Illinois basketball players who had their jerseys retired by the Flyin' Illini at a charity alumni game Saturday night. The Utah Jazz point guard also got a huge endorsement for rejoining Team USA at the 2012 London Olympics. The glowing recommendation came from Jerry Colangelo, the man who pulled the trigger on filling roster spots for the gold-medal-winning Redeem Team. "Deron was one of my top picks at point guard because I believed in him. He did the University proud, the country proud," the Illinois alum and USA Basketball managing director told the Daily Illini. Williams told Utah media he hoped being a part of the country's international team would be part of his future. "If you asked me right now, I said, 'Yeah, I want to play,"' Williams said talking about his Olympic experience. "If they want me back, I'm there."

Deron is a star, and he'll be one of the top PGs in the Association for years to come

Lagnar is right...... he is what a player should be

i love his game, he never backs down.

He will be there. So will Chris Paul. By 2012, they both will be entering what they call "the prime years". No one can say "up and coming" for these guys. They are already there.

Williams is a solid player.
If he continues to work at his game he will be in the top 3-4 point guards for the next 5-10 years

DWill was a shooting guard first and PG second in his college career. He continued to work hard and study the PG position coming into the NBA and his first year. John Stockton tutored him in the summers and he learned a lot from him. Now he is 1 of the top 3 PG in the league today. Here's a guy that has the abilities of Stockton but w/ more range and athleticism. Here's a guy that was raised 4 miles away from where I currently live. Congrats Deron and stay grounded.

Like Williams' game. Aggressive, smart & tenacious on both ends....

I hope Derron and Booz can roll that into this NBA season and the playoffs. Derron is the man, he plays ball with great instincts and desire

September 16, 2008  02:24 PM ET

And we want you to play in the 2012 Olympics, too.

September 16, 2008  04:41 PM ET

Go DWill, we all knew he wanted to keep doing it.

Guy's a star. He should be there in 2012.
