In stealth fashion, the Red Sox have been negotiating with Theo Epstein and are close to a deal that would lock up the star general manager for several years.

We'll give you JP Ricciardi straight up for Epstein.

This guy is an average GM that has free reign over the owners check book to do his job. They should be trying to hire the Marlins or the Twins general managers. These two people are the brilliant one who constantly put a good product on the field with relatively small amounts of money.

Great job guys

dont forget when Theo tried to play tuff and walked away from the sox to say he deserved more money, remember he got zero phone calls and was unemployed. One of the most overrated GM's in history. Its the money that made the sox championships not the deal that this child put together.

He should just come over to the Dark side, and sign with the Yankees... they can have Cashman

September 17, 2008  09:21 AM ET

How soon we forget the Dan Duquette era and the mess Theo had to clean up. The scouting, prospecting, and bold moves he has had to make are simply amazing. His ability of getting rid of players is uncanny. Boston fans were scared shirtless when he wanted to get rid of Nomar, Lowe, Manny, Nixon, Hillenbrand, Pedro and many others, but Theo always made it work. Sure, he's got a lot of money to work with, but look at the money he saves knowing when to fold 'em. And the prospects, he brought up Youk, Pedroia, Papelbon, he has an awesome baseball business sense.

dont forget ellsbury, lowrie, masterson, lester

September 17, 2008  10:16 AM ET

Give him the difference between what we would have paid Manny next year vs. what we'll pay Bay. His only mistake I can recall has been Lugo, but what a great job of sweeping that no-talent chihuaha under the rug!

September 17, 2008  10:18 AM ET

So.......Theo can sign JD Drew to the deal he signed him to.......and still get a contract extension????

September 17, 2008  10:21 AM ET

The boy's hurt, not Theo's fault...

September 17, 2008  10:34 AM ET

Actually that was the book on, Drew, most people expected him to get hurt.

Oh COME ONE!!! What about Julio Lug-... er.... yeah, but he got a good deal on JD Dre-... wait.... But what about getting Josh Beck-... oh yeah, that was during his "absence."

I think I've PROVED my point!!!

For the record, Lester was drafted in 2002, not by Theo... and Ellsbury WAS "hand-me-down" (albeit, a damn good one) who was first drafted by Tampa

September 17, 2008  10:50 AM ET

Yeah, JD is ALWAYS hurt......Theo had to know that going in

September 17, 2008  11:42 AM ET

You people are crazy. Money only enables you to put your plans and ideas to work. If you aren't good at your job all the $$$ in the world won't put together a winning baseball team (YANKEES?). Yes, it is impressive when an organization like the Angels can do it without the deep pockets but it sounds like most of those guys won't be back next year because there IS no $$. We want a dynasty! Theo's golden. Give the man what he wants.

September 17, 2008  11:59 AM ET

Despite Drew always being hurt, despite a bad choice in Lugo, despite having to ship Manny off mid-season, despite some prospects not living up to their expectations, despite Schilling out for the season, despite Ortiz out for 1/2 the season, despite have to shuffle around relief and starters, Theo's team is somehow still in playoff contention, with a real good shot at being in first place. Most of this done without having to dig deep in the pockets...and knowing when not to dig deep. Every high money player this season and off season was rumored to be scouted by the Red Sox because of deep pockets...and Theo let them all go. The man is pure genius.

HEY , YOU LISTENING BOSTON OWNERS ?????? YEAH YOU !!!! YOU CHEAP AZZED BAY WIPES

YOU DO NOT , REPEAT.... NOT NEGOTIATE WITH "Mr Theo Epstein"

YOU PAY HIM WHAT HE WANTS AND IF HE WON'T GIVE YOU A FIGURE YOU PAY HIM TWICE WHAT IT SHOULD BE .... GOT THAT ....

They are negotiating with him ? You gotta be kidding , its laughable ...

September 17, 2008  02:14 PM ET

He's great. He has done what decades of GM's could not do for Boston come love or tons of money.

September 17, 2008  02:37 PM ET

There have been a few days, maybe even weeks, when Drew wasn't hurt. I remember he played a whole nine innings once or twice.

September 17, 2008  02:51 PM ET

She told him to come up to her room, and bring a bag of carrots.

Autumn's right around the corner, as we have the season's first GLM sighting.
