Report: Yankees deal may be illegal

New York City and the Yankees may have violated federal tax regulations and state laws in using $943 million in tax-exempt bonds to build the baseball team's new stadium, according to a report issued on Tuesday by Assemblyman Richard L. Brodsky. Saying the taxpayers are footing the bill for the $1.3 billion Yankee Stadium in the Bronx and are getting little in return other than higher ticket prices and the loss of parkland, Mr. Brodsky, a frequent critic of the deal, said that the report stems from a review of thousands of pages of previously unreleased documents. Although city officials and the Yankees hotly disputed many of the findings, the report concluded that the city and the state invested as much as $850 million in cash and tax breaks in the new stadium, which sits across 161st Street from the team's historic home in the South Bronx.

I, for one, am SHOCKED the Yankees would do something unethical. Shocked.

Yes, I know I'm an outspoken Yankees hater, but seriously this situation is deplorable. Anyone see the the E60 report last night? It looks to me like mayor Bloomberg should be in hot water along with the Yankees as well. And no I disagree with those who will say our government has more important things to do than hold a congressional hearing over this. Poor children with high obesity rates and their families were lied to and robbed by the city and the Yankees. Read this Times story and watch the E60 report. It's one thing to be a Yankees fan and defend their practices in baseball operations. This is an entirely different thing, a social issue where they are criminals.

yeah, this comes right out of left field......

September 17, 2008  07:28 AM ET

I should clarify something from my prior comment for those who choose not to read the NY Times story - it will be a congressional subcommittee hearing tomorrow on this matter - not a "congressional hearing" as I put it. Sorry about the mix-up.

September 17, 2008  07:42 AM ET

yeah subcommittee or congressional, there are completely entirely different kinds of hot air blowing discussions. Could thing that got cleared up, cuz its going to be so much less a waste of time.

Yes, that is the only option because there is no way they would consider penal or financial repercussions.

After some research, I have concluded, without a doubt, that NY-MESS/StinkyClubfoot is an alter of Roy/Cassidy.

Hey slink, there seems to be some man-love thing for you. In all seriousness, I love the Yankees and all, but they are stiffing everyone in that area, tickets arent the only thing that's high priced, rent is going up like crazy and the tax payers are the ones paying for it. **** the Steimbrenner's!
