Tiger: I will not attend Ryder Cup

The world's top player has ended speculation that he will show up at Valhalla: "I plan to watch the Ryder Cup this week, but I will not attend," Tiger Woods said. "U.S. captain Paul Azinger has my cell phone number, and he or any U.S. player can call me any time. If I can offer any assistance, I'm happy to help." Woods, though, wasn't sure what input he could provide. Although he won the 2000 PGA Championship at Valhalla, he said he hasn't been paying attention to the PGA Tour since his knee surgery. "I doubt I can do much, since I can't play practice rounds and am not privy to their team chemistry," Woods said. "I also don't know who is playing well, who is injured, and have no feel for how the course is playing. But I'll be happy to offer my opinion. I wish the American team well and hope they can bring back the Cup."

Why would he start now. He never showed before.

Why would he start now. He never showed before. Worst single record for the U.S., and drags whoever he is playing with down with him.

He gave the players his cell phone number? For what? When a player gets in trouble what are they going to do call Woods and ask him where he can score some good mustard greens at Valhalla?

Joe F...I doubt if he has the "worst single record" for the U.S. That seems a little far-fetched. And, if he's responsible for dragging down players when he plays poorly, who's responsible for them staying down when he's wins so much and so often?

Hey nevada look it up and get back to me.

I looked it up and tiger is on several of the most lost columns. If he had the years of some of the other players on the list I am sure he would lead many of those loss categories

"I'll be happy to offer my opinion"? Are you kidding me? "I wish the American team well"? Shouldn't that be "I wish our team well"?

Bottom line: Golf is not a team game. Is anybody really that interested in the Ryder Cup? It's an individual sport, and the Ryder Cup doesn't involve teamwork like football or basketball. Instead you just add up the wins of the various individuals, and that's the "team" that wins. I know they play some of the matches as duos, but again that's really two separate individuals--it's not like blocking for your teammate or passing to him. Tiger's not a swing coach, so how's he going to help any of his "teammates?" This is such a non-story.

Gr8 comments guys. It's about time we get some "truth" in here and not some tiggy suuccckkk ups. "They can call me."... what a joke!!! Idiot.

Fjs have you ever played a best ball tourney. There are several games played by golfers that ARE team oriented so I don't know where you are coming from. Just because Tiger isn't a team player DOES NOT mean TEAM play is not a part of golf. Get over your love affair and check the history of golf. You obviously don't understand the game as well as you think.

I've yet to hear how Tiger's poor Match play makes the others play as poorly? He kicks the butt of everyone who is higher in the lost column than he. Perhaps your criticism is misdirected. Either way, he's not here this year, lets see what the "winners" can do without his losing percentage. Hopefully, it inspires them to make a statement by winning the Cup. Hopefully, it even carries over to the PGA season and makes them offer him some competition for a change. That would be welcome by all of us...especially all of you Hate-Tiger-All-The-Time whinners.

This is the most comments I've seen on a golf story in over a month. Tiger got a reaction out of you folks (good or bad). No one else seems to be able to inspire your interest in golf. What does that say?
