Heat point-guard battle brewing
New Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said the starting point guard job will be a "very competitive" battle among Marcus Banks, Mario Chalmers and Chris Quinn and has no qualms about starting a rookie if Chalmers wins the job. He likes that Banks has worked for several weeks in Miami's offseason program and sees improvement in his point guard skills. In choosing the starter, "what I'm looking for is No. 1, to be defensive-minded. From there, it's getting us into offense efficiently."

You got the preseason to make up your mind and evaluate who needs to start. Chalmers and Banks should only be the only players in question because you already know what Quinn brings. The idea is good so wait after the preseason and then make your decision.

Get what we need, some sort of: Stackhouse - Terry - Dampier (DAL) for Marion - Haslem - Banks (MIA). Plus some darftpicks to seal the deal.
This should give DAL a much better defense, rebounding and thoughness (what they have been lacking), the chance to see Barea and Green scoring in bunches from the bench and most important, $Cap$ flexibility for the next year and the 2010.
On the other hand, this move will give (MIA) the experience and productive PG we have been seeking, a good scoring veteran SG to come of the bench, a good experienced C (better than Magloire and Blount), plus the picks, plus roster flexibility with these new additions.
And if they bit higher and gamble big, they can switch Dampier & Stackhouse for Howard & Diop and beleive that Howard (who is an all around good player but a drug consumer) can settle down with the scenario change and Riley on his back.

Chalmers should start out of that trash heap of pgs. At least we know that Chalmers can play D and hit shots at a good clip. The other two are worthless. Quinn? Yeah right. Banks? He couldn't even crack the Wolves rotation. That should be all the info needed on him.

In theory.....he's right.
DEFENSE and playmaking are obviously the main goals of your point guard......
HOWEVER- with Dwade on your team- who will have his hands on the ball all the time- I would pick the point guard that can SHOOT THE BALL the best-
and that would likely be Quinn

Have to agree with jgb here. D. Wade's going to have the ball once the point guard carries it past half court. All the Heat would need is to start a PG that can shoot the ball, once the double team hits Wade.
Quinn is the best shooter of the three.

Starting the guy with the best defense is the right idea. I already said it in a previous article on the same topic.
With a lineup featuring Wade and Marion - both of which can handle the ball and spark the offense - the point guard on this team does not need to bear the full load. Being able to shoot the open shot is also a good asset to judge by, as mentioned in the posts. In fact, I bet that a big input to the decision will be made by Wade himself, since he will be receiving the pass most of the time, much as former point guards BJ Armstrong and Paxson were chosen for the old Bulls teams based on their ability to get along with and pass to Jordan the way Jordan liked it.

Normally, we would shy away from the Heat making deals like this one, for the simple reason that Riley sometimes gets the short end of the stick.
However, this sort of deal with Dallas looks good! I agree that both teams would benefit, with Dallas gaining the defensive-minded players from the Heat, and the Heat filling the glaring holes in their lineup.
It's an intriguing idea that has not yet been proposed. If the Heat and Mavs were to consider it, it would have a good chance of going through, since they are in separate conferences and won't feel as if they are helping a conference rival as well.

Huh?
Wade - sure.....but Marion ?
he doesn't handle the ball at all-
he rebounds, runs the floor- catches the pass and finishes
when in his career has he 'handled the ball'?

Chalmers will win the starting job he is by no question the best defender, many say he has been the best backcourt defender in college the past 2 years. Chalmers isnt a good defender, hes a great one. Derrick Rose couldnt do **** against his defence during summer leauge and didnt score much at all during the championship game when he was on him. They dont need a playmaker they got D-wade and the chalmers can past just as good if not better than the other two. And Quinn a better shooter? give me a break chalmers won the Mcdonalds all american shoot out and shot over 40% his whole time at Kansas. If chalmers gets the starting job he will be in the top 5 for rookie of the year

I agree with you both. The Heat desperately need someone that can put the ball in the hole. If he can handle the break, and hit the open shot, that should be the man. It appears the Heat will rely on the outside shot anyway.

Chalmers is the man they need to win the job, I dont think any Heat fan actually wants Quinn in the backcourt other than to take a occasional shot or two. Which is not to say he is not serviceable but he is hardly the guy they want to win the job. Defense and the occasional shot making, which I believe Chalmers has proven he can do at least on a smaller level(NCAA Championship), is what they need most on the point.

Gesh already this kid is in problems. Seems like its proven why the Bulls didnt pick him. Sooner of later we will find out. But If he wasnt pick so high, he would have been thrown out of the rookie camp as well.
